From STEM to STEAM
Sturt Studios: Design & Fabrication
Sturt was established in 1941 and has for decades been a centre of excellence for the promotion and teaching of Australian contemporary craft and design. Situated adjacent to the Frensham campus, Sturt plays an essential role in a Frensham education. Most recently, building on Sturt’s history, traditions, spirit and philosophy, refurbishment of facilities and course review have been undertaken to position Sturt as a contemporary world-class centre for design, technology and the arts.
By February 2015, three new Design and Fabrication studios were established to complement the existing workshops at Sturt. These studios form a creative hub where courses in digital design and fabrication are being taught by expert teachers, with access to the latest technologies to facilitate 3D printing, laser cutting and use of a CNC router.
In a world that is now so dependent on technological innovation and scientific discovery, it is essential that Frensham students leave school with the skills and motivation to undertake the many related professions linked to what are widely known as STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). A broader interpretation at Frensham refers to these as STEAM: Science and Technology interpreted through Engineering and the Arts – artistic expression, creativity and design thinking – all based in elements of Mathematics.
Sturt, for our school-age students and visiting learners, is being developed as a world-class educational centre for education in the areas of technology, engineering, the arts, mathematics, entrepreneurship and design, taught by outstanding practitioners who are able to implement innovative and inspired programmes of study.
We want our students to graduate with the highest level of creative, technological and collaborative skills and be known as innovators and entrepreneurs.
‘Everyone is talking about 3D printing. In the not-too-distant future this technology will revolutionise how we design, make, use and consume just about everything...From the re-imagination of fabrication as we know it, to printed food, replica human organs, architecture on the moon, mass customisation and the demographic of design...’
