GIB GATE • FRENSHAM • STURT
TERM 3 NO 3 - 21 AUGUST 2008

Dr Melanie Bradley, Scientist-in-Residence
Dr Melanie Bradley, Scientist-in-Residence at Frensham for the first part of this term, and currently working as a Landscape Ecologist in the Top End of Australia, opened her Address to the School at the Year 9 Service by sharing insight into what she described as her passion: ‘sustainability - the nurture and protection of the health of our planet and its inhabitants.’ I include here an excerpt from Dr Bradley’s address and note on behalf of all with whom Dr Bradley is working during her residency, the warmest appreciation of the School for the funding of this project by the Winifred West Schools Foundation.
…My interest in sustainability has led me to ponder questions such as: Where are we going as a human race? Why do we continue to inflict damage and hurt on fellow human beings, on other species, and on the environment at large? How can we reduce our footprint, our impact, on the Earth? Why does there often seem to be so much resistance to change, so much reluctance to change our ways? Why do we focus on quantities in life - getting more of this, experiencing more of that; rather than living simply and focusing on quality of life?
These are complex questions, there are no easy answers and the questions relate directly to the big sustainability challenges of our time, like climate change, decreasing availability of fresh water, habitat destruction and biodiversity loss, over-population, decreasing availability of productive agricultural land, and outbreaks of pests and disease.
I strongly believe that the issue of sustainability and its related challenges cannot only be tackled by scientists. To find appropriate, achievable, lasting solutions, and to get people inspired, motivated and committed to achieving these solutions, we need scientists working alongside musicians, writers, painters, and sculptors; working alongside tradespeople and engineers; farmers and land-managers; doctors and nurses; architects and designers; lawyers and economists; educators and teachers; community workers and welfare providers. Everyone, in every field of endeavour, has a contribution to make towards addressing sustainability and its associated challenges. Every girl in this room, can, in some way, make a difference, no matter in what field you might end up working.
There was a little bird living in a beautiful green forest. The forest contained many other animals, trees and plants. One day, the forest was set on fire. All the animals fled to the edge of the forest to save their lives. But the smallest of all birds went to a small pond and picked up a minute droplet of water in its tiny beak and flew back to the fire. The big animals looked strangely at the little bird. “What do you think you can do with such a small droplet?” they asked. The bird smiled, took another droplet and flew back to the burning forest, saying to the other animals: “This is all I can do and I should do it.”
It’s an inspiring little story, it warms my heart every time, and the key message is: don’t be afraid to get out there and have a go, to do whatever you can do to look after the health of our planet and its inhabitants. If there is an issue that you are interested in or passionate about – then read about it, learn about it, speak with your friends and family about it, and think of the actions that you can take to address the issue of concern. No action is too small; no action is insignificant; we can all make a contribution; we can all make a difference.

At the previous Tuesday’s ‘round the kitchen-table discussion’ for boarders in Years 11 and 12, Dr Bradley (a former national representative as a junior athlete) shared her passion for Athletics. These evening presentations were built into the core programme of Extension Science research projects supervised by Dr Bradley for groups of students as part of this term’s Scientist-in-Residence programme.
- Mrs Trish Symons, Director of Language Arts, recently returning from her studies at Oxford University, spoke to the School this week about inspiration and aspiration, linking her thoughts to the notion of the ‘dreaming spires of Oxford’. She began: ‘We aspire to things and we are inspired by people, places and stories…

GIB GATE

The 2008 Book Week celebrations held during Week 4 reaffirmed just how much the Gib Gate community values Australian literature and the pleasure which can be found in reading. Parents are thanked for assisting their children in preparing imaginative costumes for the Book Week parade and for purchasing so many books at the Book Fair. Gib Gate parents organised an ‘Aussie’ feast, complete with authentic wool bales, hay and horse riding paraphernalia for the Book Week lunch.
On Friday 15 August, Ms Robson attended the NSW Junior School Heads’ Association of Australia (JSHAA) AGM which was held at Broughton Anglican School. One of the many roles of the NSW branch of JSHAA is to provide the opportunity for Heads of Junior schools to share in professional development and also to provide a forum in which to discuss common issues relating to primary education in NSW. Discussions focused on the changes in Teacher Accreditation through the NSW Institute of Teachers and how schools and individual teachers meet the Professional Development standards.
At Winifred West Schools the professional development of staff forms a core part of School policy. Whole school staff development, as well as Gib Gate and individual teacher-specific professional development are scheduled on a yearly basis. An overview of this schedule is available to parents through the Gib Gate Educational and Financial Report published on the School’s website.
On Tuesday 19 August, Gib Gate welcomed Hokuriku Gakuin students and staff to the School for three days filled with activity. In the lead up to the visit Year 6 students prepared the School by introducing profiles of each of the Hokuriku students at assemblies. The Hokuriku Gakuin students took great delight in reading their profile posters when they arrived at Gib Gate.
One of the most memorable aspects of the visit was the way every student at Gib Gate felt part of the experience, spending the majority of the three days in ‘buddy groups’ with their siblings and Hokuriku Gakuin students. Gib Gate parents organised and served a Japanese lunch and Ms Maki Taguchi prepared Bento boxes.
On Wednesday evening the Family Night at Eling Forrest was filled to capacity with parents and children having so much fun together.
Ms Sally Robson, Head of Gib Gate
Curriculum Insights Week 5 Term 3 2008

On 12 August, students participated in the final competition for the year which was the English paper. Results for both this competition and the Mathematics paper which was held on 29 July will be available towards the end of the term.
Students representing Gib Gate in both the Robocup Challenge and the Tournament of Minds Competition are working hard towards completing their projects for presentation in the regional finals in Week 6 this term.

Sturt Gallery
A special exhibition will open at Sturt Gallery on Sunday 14 September. This exhibition comprises work made by the workshop residents at Melbourne’s Pieces of Eight Gallery. The six exhibiting artists include; Nina Ellis, Lucy Folk, Rachel Gorman, Melanie Katsalidis, Krista McRae and Suzi Zutic.
Pieces of Eight is an innovative gallery and workshop in Melbourne’s North Fitzroy which showcases contemporary jewellery and object-based work. This is the first time these six jewellers have exhibited together. While sharing the studio workshop, inspiration for each craftsperson comes from a wide range of sources, and these include: the hardy weeds of the Australian landscape; the pleasures and colour which food inspires; the inspiration of material; combining ceramic and metal to re-create versions of costume or ‘dress-up’ jewellery; the beautiful and elegant nature of organic pearls’ the sublimeness of shape; and lastly, a series of rings. This exhibition will open at 11am on Sunday 14 September and continue till 19 October, when it travels on to Inform Gallery, Christchurch, New Zealand.
Megan Patey, Head of Sturt
FRENSHAM
Deputy Head
Year 12 students have completed their Trial Examinations and are now finishing courses in preparation for the HSC.
Year 11 students are preparing for the Year Parent Weekend and they also have approximately one month until their Preliminary Course Examinations. Additionally, they will be confirming their final HSC course load, a process which involves an interview with the Director of Studies or Deputy Head.
Aside from their preparation for the School Certificate examinations early in Term 4, Year 10 girls have begun to consider subject choices for Years 11 and 12. Their initial options are used to structure the subject lines and they will make their final selection late in Term 4. Students will be given extra information about HSC subjects over the next few weeks.
Year 9 students are eagerly awaiting the Global Forum which will take place in Week 6 of Term 3. Years 7 and 8 have their examination period in Week 8 of Term 3.
The Hockey and Netball seasons are approaching the half way mark. A number of teams are vying for positions in the final and the results in the next few weeks will determine the final placings.
Mr Geoff Marsh, Deputy Head
Director of Studies
Year 12 students have just completed the HSC Trial Examinations in a highly appropriate and engaged fashion. To conclude this examination period the cohort took part in a Development Day on Monday 14 August and participated wholeheartedly, gaining much from the full day and evening programme.
Students worked with Ms Joanne Parsons to speak through ‘states of mind’, looking at life priorities and affirmative thinking. In the afternoon they took part in a series of relaxation exercises with Mr Paul Cox and a workshop (Elevate Education) on how to enhance their current examination preparation, especially for the final HSC examinations in October and November. In the evening the girls were given an opportunity to watch and work with Theatresports Australia; an entertaining evening which allowed many to showcase their considerable improvisational and acting skills.
Parents of Year 12 students will receive an interim report next week which will contain the HSC Trial marks.
Next week students in Years 7 and 8 will receive their examination timetables and complete final organisational and examination practice leading up to their Yearly Examinations in Week 7 (beginning on 1 September).
Mr Matthew McMahon, Director of Studies
Director of Boarding
The focus of all Boarding activities over the past week has been the Olympics. Girls have been following with interest the path of Australian athletes and those of other countries.
The Year 11 and 12 discussions last Tuesday night considered the issue of whether or not the Olympic Games were still relevant. The discussion was led by the Scientist in Residence, Dr Melanie Bradley. Views on whether the economic cost was justifiable in today’s world were varied and interesting.
Parents are reminded that Exeat forms must be submitted by Friday lunch time, so that they can be disbursed in a timely manner. If Weekly Boarders are not returning home but are staying elsewhere they also must submit a properly authorised Exeat form. Telephone requests are not acceptable.

Career News
The next six weeks will be an active time for Year 12 students, who will be researching and considering university and course choices. They have received the 2009 UAC Guide which lists over 1200 courses on offer next year at NSW and ACT universities. Each Year 12 student will be interviewed and offered support by the School at this time and it is also important that parents have discussions with their daughters regarding choices. One major change is that no domestic fee-paying (DFEE) places will be offered to 2008 HSC students, which means only Commonwealth supported places will be offered. The implications of this have been discussed with Year 12.
Please note that while the School requires Year 12 students to make an online application to UAC by 30 September, they can change any course/university choice as many times as they like until the first week of January 2009. The School will be publishing a Careers Newsletter fortnightly for the remainder of this term and students are urged to read these carefully.
Scholarship applications should be prepared over the next few weeks as the closing date for many of these is between 26-30 September. A reminder to view the website http://www.myfuture.edu.au which has an extensive listing of scholarships available not only in NSW but nationally, as well as the Scholarship link on specific university sites.
Early Entry applications and the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) have similar closing dates but must be handed in to the School for final processing no later than Monday 15 September. Any queries about these applications should be made as soon as possible as some of the supporting documentation (from Specialists etc) can be time consuming to obtain.
Year 10 Work Experience Programme: Employer Evaluation forms have been given to Year 10 students with follow up comments. The placements this year were diverse and the experiences gained worthwhile.
Year 9 Parents are urged to begin the process of seeking a work experience placement for their daughters as many of the popular choices have a 12-month waiting list. The 2009 Work Experience dates are 29 June to 3 July.

English and Drama
In both Drama and Extension 2 English, there is a focus this week on the practical components of the courses.
In Drama, students presented both their Group Performances and Individual Projects on Friday 15 August in Clubbe Hall. While most students chose Performance for their Individual Projects, other options chosen were Design – Costume, Design – Promotion and programme and Video Drama. External markers viewed all tasks and marked according to HSC marking guidelines. The girls now have until 5 September to fine-tune all aspects of their work. On this date, the HSC External Examination will occur where Group Performance and Individual Project: Performance will be assessed by the Board of Studies. Students who chose alternative options for their Individual Project will complete their work this week for submission to the Board of Studies on 25 August.
The Major Works in Extension 2 English will be completed this week for submission on 22 August. The final product is the end of a long process of development, research and editing and a reflection statement on this process is included, which contributes significantly to the HSC mark.
Twelve students and a support team will travel to Holy Sprit College at Bellambi for the South Coast Public Speaking. The team will be accompanied by Mrs McClay and Ms Samuels. Debaters in both Year 9 and Year 10 are continuing their training in preparation for the AHIGS Festival of Speech on 12 and 13 September. As well as the Enrichment Class in Year 9 and Lunchtime meetings in Year 10, a special workshop on rebuttal will be held this Friday night with Joana Matasic in Room 6, supervised by Ms Samuels.
In Prayers on 22 August Certificates for the ICAS Writing Competition will be awarded with details to be published in the next Newsletter.
During this week Years 10, 11 and 12 will be completing Listening tasks as part of their assessment programme. Year 12 Advanced will have the opportunity to listen to a presentation by Ruth Wilson, an Oral Historian and this will provide the text for their task.

Music
The Music Centre at Frensham has been hosting the AMEB Performance Examinations. Visiting examiners have been listening to musicians from Frensham and the wider community perform a selection of pieces on their instruments and then proceeding to test the students on their general knowledge and aural skills. Instruments examined ranged from string, woodwind and brass through to piano and voice. The musicians are congratulated on their dedication and hard work.
Last week the Senior Choir and Madrigals recorded the best of their 2008 repertoire for inclusion in a future CD release of Frensham music and musicians. They are commended for the standard and discipline of the performances.
We look forward with Year 11 to the approaching Parent Weekend and the performances which will comprise their service and concert. In addition to this, the Senior Choir and Madrigals are preparing to perform in Frensham Fellowship’s Musical Soirée Concerts on the same weekend.

Science
Frensham’s Scientist-in-Residence, Dr Melanie Bradley has been working on a range of tasks with students from different year groups. This follows her inspiring and passionate address to the School community as part of the Year 9 Service. Dr Bradley has brought her expertise and enthusiasm for sustainable practices to Frensham and has devised a range of challenges which require students to assess the environment in a variety of different contexts.
The Year 7 groups have been discussing issues relating to the Australian environment and natural resources. These have been from many topical areas including kangaroo harvesting, feral animals and weed control. Following the investigation students will develop management recommendations supported by scientific data.
Year 8 students are developing an understanding of the tropical savanna landscapes of northern Australia and how fire is used as a land management tool. This allows exploration of how both western scientific knowledge and traditional Aboriginal skills can be used to achieve sustainable land management practices.
The development of innovative environmental education initiatives both in Australia and overseas is a focus for Year 9. The design of a centre for environmental education at Frensham has provided a context for this outcome. Subgroups within Year 9 have been looking at the environmental impacts of building design, construction and operation. Furthermore, the design of an environmental education centre will be closely linked to the curriculum.
Girls in Year 10 have been developing a greater awareness and understanding of the Frensham food system, including improvements to sustainability. This has raised many concerns about ethical consumerism and provided students with opportunities to explore creative solutions.
Each year group has particular learning outcomes to achieve and the findings will be presented to specific target groups. This will ensure Dr Bradley’s message of sustainability and that every person can make a difference is communicated to a wider audience.

Teaching and Learning
On 10 and 11 August Mrs Kate Chauncy and Mrs Bronwyn Tregenza attended the Association of Independent Schools Executive Conference. This year’s theme was ‘Challenging, connecting with and engaging the adolescent learner’.
Keynote presenters included Dr Andrew Fuller, Fellow of the Department of Psychiatry and Department of Learning and Educational Development at University of Melbourne; Dr Carol Ann Tomlinson, Parish Professor and Chair of Education Leadership, Foundations and Policy at the University of Virginia and Dr Michael Nagel, Lecturer in Cognition and Human Learning, University of Sunshine Coast.
Dr Fuller’s work has involved analysing the factors which contribute to adolescent and teenage depression and anxiety. One of the factors correlating highly with rates of anxiety and depression is erratic study habits (ie bursts of high intensity only in the periods immediately preceding an assessment hand-in or examination) and poor organisational skill (ie limited use of timetables, diaries and study schedules, ineffective filing systems for materials and disorder in the workspace). While students are presented with information about these skills on many occasions throughout each school year, developing consistent success requires ongoing monitoring and coaching. Form Tutors, Year Coordinators, Senior Teachers in Boarding and House Staff are all involved in promoting these skills at Frensham. Senior students also often adopt a mentor who may assist with study habits and organisational skills.
Dr Tomlinson’s presentation was given via video conference after airline difficulties prevented her travel. Her messages about differentiation stirred the audience deeply as she presented numerous case studies of successful scholars who were unlikely to have succeeded except for teachers who recognised their need for an individualised approach. Dr Tomlinson presented a simple model for the interaction between curriculum, teacher and student.
