GIB GATE • FRENSHAM • STURT
TERM 2 NO 3 - 29 MAY 2008

Final plans for the 95th Birthday have already involved almost every member of the School in some way. Within what is now a three-day programme that includes carefully considered Services, the Frensham Birthday Play, Birthday picnics and team sport on the Games Field, Cutting of the Birthday Cake and sharing of messages from around the world, the opportunity to be addressed by members of staff and students offers new insights and adds to the sense of community and memory generated each year. This year Ms Megan Patey, Head of Sturt, will offer the Address to Winifred West Schools on Friday morning at our 10.00am Service in Clubbe Hall and, later in the day, Year 12 representatives, Caitlin McDougall and Kate Green, will offer their Birthday Message followed by Mr Matthew McMahon, Director of Studies who has accepted Year 12’s invitation to speak at the Birthday Lunch. At last week’s Gib Gate Assembly I spoke to students about our reasons for meeting annually to acknowledge our Birthday, including the expectation that we pause to consider our heritage, to assess our current efforts and ability to meet expectations and to acknowledge the need to plan for the future – to see if we continue to ‘grow up’. For the Music faculty and for Senior Drama the Birthday also offers a special opportunity for performance. From the choral work of the entire student body of Gib Gate and Frensham, signing the Gib Gate Hymn and an Anthem entitled One Voice to the Year 3 & 4 Birthday Poem recitation and the Years 11 & 12 production Arsenic and Old Lace we are sensing the excitement that is generated when teams of students work with staff to achieve a common goal.
We look forward to meeting parents, grandparents, former parents, staff and students in the context of our 95th Birthday!
Acknowledgement to:
- Girdle recipients Odetta Davison for Academic Excellence and Diana (Rosie) Nielsen for Service;
- The team of girls who participated in the 2008 Red Shield Appeal for the Salvation Army, raising $3000 on Sunday 25 May. Led by Community Service committee members Emma Pfeiffer and Alexandra Thomas, the strong support of senior students made the morning a fine example of active service and positive spirit: Group One: Ashleigh Syme, Emma Gorman, Harriette Nation, Sarah Mitchell, Emily Irish, Katie Snow, Molly MacDiarmid Group Two: Fiona Davidson, Claudia Mooney, Emma Bowman, Rosie Latimer, Alice Lee-Warner Group Three: Harriet King, Adelaide Lang, Charlotte Lymbery, Lucia Mentink, Jacklyn Wyer, Isis Oliver Group Four: Nerida Leahy, Nicola Forrest, Isabelle Gillespie, Lucy Hawker Group Five: Jessica Burns, Isabeau Gavel, Freya Spencer, Kate Hawker, Olivia Luff, Ainsley Maurer, Jordan Ashby, Neeta Lamba Group Six: Georgina Paton, Edwina Stump, Hannah Beith, Kate Daniel, Anna Martel Group Seven: Emily Cameron, Rebecca Sampson, Lucy Daniel, Brooke Martin-Smith, Lyreda Bennetts, Natasha Smart Group Eight: Camilla Terbutt, Elizabeth Friend, Constance Mort, Tennessee Lang, Emily-Rose Currans, Jarra Robinson Group Nine: Sally Newton, Amy Wyer, Harriet Pfeiffer, Alexandra Thomas, Jessica Brigden, Phillipa Daniel, Sarah-Jane Smeeth;
- Contributors by donation to Frensham’s Loud Shirt Day which raised over $500 for the Shepherd Centre for Deaf Children;
- Elsie Wright, Year 8 for her quick response, with Mrs Whyte in caring for an injured cat (Daisy Marsh) that is now recovering in her home in Holt Cottage, much to the delight of the Marsh family;
- Gib Gate Year 6 students for their high quality presentation at Performance Assembly where they set a fine example for younger members of the School. Particularly, Year 6 architectural work relating to the Car Park Pavilion is worthy of serious consideration;
- Duke of Edinburgh’s Award recent recipients: Bronze - Charlotte Alrich and Christy Nochar; Silver - Elouise Abraham, Sophie Bligh, Georgina Davies and Lucinda Nicholls Small;
- Entrants in the Year Book Cover competition launched by Annika Rookyard and Emily Holland;
- The Mock Trial team who competed recently in their final stage of the competition against Canberra Girls’ Grammar School;
- Year 10 course assistants and competitors involved in the IGSSA Cross Country held at Frensham on Friday 16 May. We have received numerous calls and e-mails from participating schools and organisers congratulating the team who managed the event for Frensham. Full credit also goes to Mr Geoff Marsh on his expert planning for the day in support of PDHPE staff;
- CIS Cross Country competitors from Gib Gate and Frensham, who will be representing IGSSA and JSHAA at this week’s championships at Eastern Creek: Lydia Hall and Grace Musgrove (Frensham) and Olivia Spring, Emil Thaning and Lilli Jephcott (Gib Gate);
- Year 11, who take over full responsibility for the administration and management of the weekend’s events on the Games Field and in Clubbe Hall, in support of Year 12’s final Parent Weekend;
- Year 12 teachers, who meet with parents and Year 12 to discuss their progress in these final months of the Higher School Certificate year. The effort being made by staff to work alongside individuals must not be taken for granted but is core to the approach in place in all faculties. [This week’s Sydney Morning Herald advice about numbers of HSC Special Provisions applications endorsed by the Board of Studies over the past three years was the source of much anger and disappointment for our current Year 12 who, understanding the process, are concerned at the suggestion that there is unfair advantage being sought by peers or the School. Girls and staff continue to do all that is possible to support each individual and the privacy associated with that undertaking makes further commentary inappropriate.] As we would expect, Year 12 2008 are working with strong focus academically whilst also keen to share their expertise, experience and time in support of younger students;
Science - Outstanding Achievement
Rachel Latimer, Year 8 has received an invitation this week to be one of 20 delegates to the National Questacon Smartmoves Invention Convention run by the CSIRO in Canberra during the June/July Vacation.
As a prizewinner within this Australia-wide competition for 13-18 year olds, Rachel’s creative solution to the challenge to use Science to solve an everyday problem has been considered worthy of development, marketing and patent protection.
Rachel entered the competition with the support of Senior Teacher in Science, Mr Jason Smith, following the CSIRO’s visit to Frensham in March this year. For her entry Rachel constructed a prototype of her invention and assembled a portfolio to support her thinking.
Advisory Committee Meetings
Reports from the Minutes of the Term 2 meetings will be published in the next Newsletter, once Minutes have been finalised, but I do offer thanks to Mr James Pfeiffer who tendered his resignation to the Frensham Advisory Committee at our recent meeting, owing to his imminent move to Dubai. Vacancies on both Committees will be advertised to parents prior to the end of this term.

GIB GATE
We would like to thank the parents who attended the recent ‘Dance Off’ at Gib Gate. Students from Transition to Year 6 were delighted to see so many parents and they enjoyed the opportunity to entertain such an appreciative audience. The Semester One Dance Programme has been a great success and very popular with students. Mrs Lomax will run some refresher lessons in Term 3 in preparation for the Foundation Bush Dance and the Family Evening at Eling Forest, where we will enjoy some line dancing with children and staff from Hokuriku Gakuin School in Japan.

The Interrelate Family Evening held at Gib Gate last week was also well attended by Gib Gate families. The presentation focused on the Personal Development topics of ‘Where do I Come from?’ and ‘Puberty’ and was facilitated by Lyndall Caldwell. Parents and students openly discussed important topics in personal development.
Ms Sally Robson, Head of Gib Gate
Curriculum Insights
In addition to the classroom teaching and learning programmes in the Key Learning Areas of HSIE and Science and Technology, students from Preschool to Year 6 have extended their knowledge and understanding of each topic through incursions and excursions this term.
“Get down low and go, go go!” was the personal safety message delivered to both Reception and Transition classes by members of the local Mittagong and Bowral Fire Brigades who visited Gib Gate Preschool on two occasions in full uniform and, most importantly, in the Fire Engine. Children were able to sit in the truck and drive and use the fire hose to put out an imaginary fire. Transition has also been ‘travelling around the world’ in aeroplanes and hosted a visit by Mr Damian Brown, who explained for which tasks he was responsible as a pilot.
Kindergarten and Mrs Armida, with Mrs Belinda Gould as tour leader, went on a History Walk around the School’s natural and built environment to discover significant areas and objects which are important to understanding what makes Gib Gate a special place to students, both past and present and to the school Community. Maps were created and photographs of each site taken to facilitate further discussion about the sites themselves and the sequence of the places visited and discovered.
Glenys Howarth, a past teacher at Gib Gate, was the guest speaker to Year 1 and 2 students to extend their understandings in the HSIE unit “Identifying Us”. She talked about the volunteer work she does in the local community, why she does it, what it means to serve others and the benefits of service for herself, the recipients of her services and the wider community.
Year 3 students experienced what life was like in the local area prior to British colonisation on their excursion to Fitzroy Falls in Week 2. Indigenous National Parks and Wildlife Education Officers delivered a hands-on experience in the natural environment about the history of the local people and their traditional way of life, including bush tucker, medicinal plants, trading, weaving, hunting and music making.
Life in the early years of Australia’s history became real life for a day for Year 4 students last week. “Convicted!” in the 1820s, sent to Sydney and thence to work at Elizabeth Macarthur’s sheep farm, students researched their past persona in preparation for their excursion to Elizabeth Farm Historic site at Parramatta. Transported back in time to 1828, students were met by the head housekeeper and assigned their duties after careful explanation about the rules and regulations which now applied to them. This role-playing experience enhanced students’ understanding of Australia’s past in support of their HSIE unit “Terra Nullius – The Early Years”.
Year 5 visited the Australian Museum in Canberra on Monday 19 May, to further their understanding of the development of the Australian Identity. Displays featuring a variety of artefacts from migrants who have made Australia their home throughout the past 200 years and which have now become Australian symbols were scrutinised and photographed. In addition, as part of the Term 3 Science and Technology unit, students visited the hands-on exhibit ‘Imagination Factory’ at Questacon to develop a deeper understanding about how simple machines help us perform jobs in our everyday lives.
In Science and Technology, Year 6 students are designing a structure to provide shelter at the Gib Gate Roundabout. To enable them to understand the design and manufacturing process and assist them to undertake the process in a professional manner, a visiting expert in the field delivered two sessions in the classroom. Ms Felicity Wheeler, B Arch (Hons), a registered architect, explained how to conduct a site analysis and the process of making a model and she showed students examples of different and unusual pavilion type structures. Mr Jonathon Purvis, a Landscape Designer will visit shortly to discuss how landscaping design incorporating water conservation elements beautify the surroundings of built structures. To support the HSIE investigation of Trade and Australia’s global connections, Mrs April Jephcott, visited the classroom and spoke about the international trade process from her experience as a grower, processor and exporter of coffee in New Guinea.

Curriculum Coordinator P-6 & Coordinator of Gifted and Talented Programmes
String Day Camp
All Gib Gate string players who are in the Orchestra have been learning the repertoire for the workshop day on Sunday 13 June. Many Gib Gate students attended last year and enjoyed the opportunity to work under different conductors and with string players from all over the Southern Highlands and the SCEGGS orchestra.
Visiting Performances
The Musica Viva group ‘Tigramuna’ will visit Gib Gate next week. This award winning Latin American group will perform original music. After the long weekend, the Opera Australia in Schools will present their annual opera. This year they are performing a shortened version of The Barber of Seville. Gib Gate students enjoy this annual opportunity to experience the operatic form at school.

Artists-in-Residence
A special residency will occur from 9 June till 19 July this year when Annie Trevillian and Monique Van Nieuwland share the space as residents in the weaving room at Sturt. Annie and Monique are both from Canberra, and will be working independently on their specific areas of interest. They will also collaborate on projects during their joint residency.
Monique Van Nieuwland
Monique has been working with woven textiles for over thirty years. She has worked on commissions for curtains and tablecloths for public and private buildings, as well as the design and production of scarves. During her residency, Monique aims to develop a range of woven and printed interior textiles such as cushions, table runners, dividers and scarves. She plans to combine woven design with spontaneous printed design elements, exploring colour and branching out into gauze leno weave.
Annie Trevillian
During her residency, Annie will be developing imagery and designs for printed textiles using the immediate surroundings as inspiration to create a new series of work based on a theme which crosses cloth, landscape and place. Annie uses found objects, drawing, painting, digital imagery, collage and photoshop to generate ideas. This gives any interested people the chance to see the design process from inspiration right through to the finished product.
Both Annie and Monique welcome visitors during their time at Sturt. They are keen to communicate in as many ways as possible and as educators, welcome the opportunity provided by the residency to speak to a wider audience at Sturt. Both will be giving public lectures, details of which will be in the next newsletter.
Sturt Winter School
Positions are still available for most courses in the Winter School to be held from 7 – 11 July. For further information, view the website www.sturt.nsw.edu.au or ring Sturt on 02 4860 2083. For anyone interested in a particular course, contact Sturt now as courses fill quickly.
Sturt Gallery
Annie Trevillian’s printed fabrics are on display at Sturt Gallery until July 13. This exhibition includes a magnificent rug, designed by Annie and printed by Designer Rugs in Sydney. The rug is made of pure wool, and provides a strong central piece to this engaging, colourful exhibition. As well, Annie has included a wide range of printed tea towels available for purchase from the shop. Sturt Gallery is open seven days, 10am-5pm each day. Ph 02 4860 2083 for further details.

A reminder to Day Boarder parents:
- Daughters are to be picked up from their Boarding House and not from Range Road or Waverley Parade;
- All school services are formal occasions and girls should attend wearing stockings, blazers and hats;
- Please ensure that School shoes are cleaned each day.
The last four weeks of Term 2 include the June Long Weekend and the final Closed Weekend. Girls in Year 12 have received their Trial HSC Examination Timetables and they will have begun planning their study schedules in preparation for the Trial Examinations. Year 11 girls have slightly more than one Term left before they finish their Preliminary HSC Courses, complete their Preliminary Examinations and commence their HSC study. Year 10 will spend the last week of Term 2 on Work Experience. Year 9 has begun preparation for the Year 9 Parent Weekend scheduled for the 9-10 August in Term 3 and most of Year 9 will be involved in a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition on the final Closed Weekend. Years 7 and 8 have their Examination Week in Week 8 of Term 3.
All girls are looking forward to the start of the Hockey and Netball season. Team selections will begin after the final round of Soccer and Basketball. Trial matches against Canberra Girls’ Grammar School have been organised for the last weekend of Term.
Mr Geoff Marsh, Deputy Head
Director of Studies
The first of the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Competitions commences this week. Each year Frensham students take part in four of the ICAS tests: Science, Writing, Mathematics and English.
The Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) organisation, under the auspices of the UNSW, runs these tests and 10 countries are involved. It is anticipated that in 2008 some 1.7 million entries will be received across the various tests from Australia and New Zealand alone.
There are a variety of skills which students will be tested on and it is worth noting that these tests are designed with the Australian curricula in mind (across each state and territory) not just NSW Board of Studies syllabuses.
The schedule for the 2008 ICAS tests at Frensham will be:
Science Thursday 29 May
Writing Thursday 12 June
Mathematics Tuesday 29 July
English Tuesday 12 August
More details about these tests can be found at the EAA website:
http://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/about_icas/

Mr Matthew McMahon, Director of Studies
Director of Boarding
On this our 95th Birthday week, we look back and give thanks to those who paved the way, for those who had the vision and those who supported them. The preparations are well under way and so are the discussions about what to wear. The history of Frensham is entwined with the building of boarding houses and their changing use over the past 95 years. The first boarding house purchased was Glenn in 1915 and the first purpose-built boarding house was Little Wing in 1917. It was known as The Babies’ Wing as the youngest members of the School were housed there. North Wing was built in 1926, Hartfield in 1934, West Wing in 1937, ‘46’ in 1946 then came the building of Kennedy, Bryant and McCarthy followed by the purchase of Linden and Turner. As Miss Kennedy stated “Bricks and mortar are tangible material things; it is the invisible, intangible spirit that matters. While looking forward to the future we must also understand and remember the past.”
The Red Shield Appeal for the Salvation Army was undertaken on Sunday morning by a small group of very enthusiastic girls organised by Alexandra Thomas and Harriet Pfeiffer. They collected $3000 and 20 cents, a commendable effort.
Parents are asked to be on time to pick up and drop off girls for the Sydney Bus. The bus has only a limited time allowed at the bay.
Also parents should check that their daughters have an adequate supply of underclothing and at least three pairs of stockings.
We look forward to seeing as many parents as possible on this Birthday weekend.
Mrs Susan Cyganiewicz & Mrs Ros Buick, Co-Directors of Boarding
English and Drama
Theatrical performances are always interesting and valuable and in the past two weeks girls had the opportunity to watch a number of plays. Years 7 – 9 attended the Young Australia Production of Soldier Boy with an audience from local schools in Clubbe Hall. The content was based on the non-fiction text of the same name studied in Year 8 English and Year 9 History and the girls enjoyed the representation which gave them a sense of the social conditions of the time with families and the immense pride and nationalism felt in the community at the time. “Awe inspiring”, “demonstrating how the enthusiasm for war changed through first hand experience”, were some of the comments made by Year 8 students.
Girls in Year 9 travelled to the Wharf Theatre for the Sydney Theatre Production of Romeo and Juliet. The Sydney Writers’ Festival was also located at the same venue and during lunch two girls were interviewed by Sky News about what they were reading at the moment. This play was adapted to a modern Australian country setting with an indigenous focus which was an interesting transformation, appealing to the students in different ways. It was interesting to note the development of the girls’ critical literacy in their reviewing of the performance.
That same evening Year 12 Extension 1 attended a performance of David Williamson’s Dead White Males by the Peninsula Theatre Company. This was an outstanding production, conveying very clearly the satirical ideas which Williamson had intended.
Over the next week, students in Advanced and Standard English in Year 12 will complete their oral assessment on either Cloudstreet or State of Shock. All HSC and Preliminary tasks are marked by two markers in the English Faculty to provide a balanced and objective evaluation of how the students have met the marking criteria for the task.
A Year 10 Debating group, coached by Ms Samuels has begun meeting each week at lunch on Wednesdays. Another debating group is being finalised by Sarah Hayes and Charlotte Merz, Heads of Public Speaking and Debating. This group will bring together girls from Years 7-10 for in-school debates initially, with the prospect of inter-school competition later in the year. Year 9 will again have the opportunity to complete the debating Extension module in Term 3 in class time with Mrs Vink. Girls interested in this course must speak to their class teachers this term.
Auditions for the Junior production have been completed and the cast list published with rehearsals commencing as per the schedule on the calendar in the Newsletter. Girls involved are expected to attend all rehearsals.

Year 12 French Conversation Afternoon
On Friday 23 May from 4-5.30 pm, the Year 12 French class hosted six students and two teachers from Oxley College and two students from Chevalier College for an afternoon of French conversation.
The purpose of the afternoon was to practise for the upcoming HSC Oral Examination on 9 August. Students were interviewed by an ‘unknown’ teacher to talk about their personal world, their family, friends, hobbies and their plans for the future.
All agreed the afternoon was most worthwhile and we plan to organise another in the near future.
Merci à toutes.
Madame Heininger, French Teacher
Music
The Year 8 Parent Weekend provided Frensham musicians and ensembles with an opportunity to perform in the School Service and the concert which followed. A highlight of the Service was the Senior Choir’s anthem Joyful Alleluia. It is an antiphonal work, in which the Choir was divided into two in order to sing from different parts of the Hall. They sang with energy and commitment and the effect was quite inspirational.
The concert began with a performance of the 1st movement from Vivaldi’s Concert Grosso in C by a Year 8 String Orchestra, formed especially for the concert by Mrs Mercer. The Concert Band conducted by Mr Bunyan then played a medley from Pirates of the Caribbean. A saxophone duet comprising Kate Hawker and Rachel Latimer with Alice Scamps-Goodman on drums, was also supported by Mr Bunyan.
Solo performers in the concert included: Ella Purvis performing an Irish study on the violin; Georgina MacDiarmid singing Think of Me from Les Miserables, Chloe Andrews performing Black Eyes and Madeleine Bowdern playing Handel’s Sonata in F Maj “Siciliana & Giga”. Ms Madden accompanied the latter two on the piano. The final item in the concert featured all of Year 8 as they displayed skills learnt in their study of Music from other Cultures by playing traditional Irish and African instruments and singing an Irish song in Gaelic.
There are some exciting events approaching quickly: first and foremost is the Birthday Weekend with all its rich musical traditions and on Wednesday 4 June the AHIGS Choral Festival. This annual event is being hosted by Frensham this year which means that not only will all 93 Senior Choir members have an opportunity to participate for the first time but also, our community will have the chance to see what should be a high quality and entertaining concert at 6.30pm that evening. Please see the enclosed letter.

Careers
During Week 6, I will meet with Year 10 students to distribute copies of the Host Employer Consent Forms. These contain information regarding work experience tasks, special requirements (such as clothing, footwear and meals), working hours, the contact person or supervisor and any other relevant information they may need.
Again, there is a great diversity of work experiences from which to choose, such as: veterinary nursing, equine management, journalism, architecture and graphic design, public relations and marketing, law, finance, fashion design, medicine, nursing and healthcare, marine biology, hospitality and events management, charity work, radio and television, opera, theatre, aviation, education and science.
Every placement looks worthwhile and I include here a sample, for interest: working on the ABC television show Catalyst or on the sets of False Witness and Priscilla, the Musical. Feeding and caring for porpoises on the north coast, attending rehearsals and behind-the-scenes of Opera Australia, working with the Brumbiesfootball team in Canberra, Save the Children charity organisation, Alliance Francaise, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and WIN TV. Six fashion enthusiasts will visit Surry Hills designers while another six will work in publishing and journalistic fields. One student will work in the Physics Department UNSW on astronomical research; another five girls will explore different areas of medicine.
Careers testing will take place on Wednesday 18 June, conducted by a qualified practitioner who analyses the data and provides feedback through a detailed twelve-page individual report early in Term 3. Any Year 11 or 12 student who has not had the opportunity to be tested has been invited to join with the Year 10 cohort.
With the arrival of information for cadetships and scholarships for 2009, it is important that Year 12 students continually check the Careers area in Study Hall as new information is constantly being added and the closing dates for many applications can vary.

Sport
The 2008 Cross-Country season has been an enjoyable one. This year Frensham had competitors in the 13-18 Years divisions and was 12th overall. Every girl trained hard throughout Terms 1 and 2 and represented the School with pride at the IGSSA carnival.
The team was led by Lydia Hall and Harriet Pfeiffer who worked with them during training sessions to improve their technique and skill level. There was improvement in the girls as they developed over the season.
The following girls are congratulated for being placed in the top 15 of their age group: Grace Musgrove, Alice Lee-Warner and Lydia Hall. They represent the school in the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Carnival on Friday 30 May at Eastern Creek Raceway.
