GIB GATE • FRENSHAM • STURT
TERM 2 NO 5 - 26 JUNE 2008

In Canberra from Friday afternoon of 20 June till mid-afternoon of Sunday 22 June I joined 150 delegates representing 68 government and independent schools from all states and territories of Australia and from New Zealand, for the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Annual Conference: Broadening the Horizons for Girls.
Features of this year’s Conference were the quality of Keynote speakers and the intensity of the programme – seven Keynote Addresses in less than 48 hours, whilst also important was the opportunity to discuss with colleagues matters arising from each Address. In brief I note here for current and future consideration some of the ideas of greatest interest:
- Through one of the world’s leading experts in religious and values education, Peter Vardy [Vice President of Heythrop College, London]: ‘What does it take to be fully human….? What makes a good human being? Who are admirable human beings? What sort of person are you going to become? Do we want our students to be lamps or mirrors in society?
- Through Sally Heligsman, author of The Female Advantage: Women’s Ways of Leadership and The Web of Inclusion: A New Architecture for Building Great Organisations, the impact of such issues as diversity, customisation and the breakdown of traditional barriers and/or values, on how we teach today;
- Through Dr Sarah Maddison, Director of The Australia Institute and Lecturer at the University of NSW, the importance of girls knowing what women in the past have done to make a difference, in order to understand what is possible for them to achieve in the future;
- Through Helen Christiansen, Director of the Centre for Mental Health Research and member of the Australian Foundation for Mental Health, the thinking behind a recently-developed interactive, research-based programme for teenagers developed through the Australian National University and designed to support mental health of teenagers: www.moodgym.com.au
- Another particularly interesting part of the Conference was a workshop that involved participants in considering another School’s leadership framework, in this case those of Nga Tawa, a Diocesan High School in Wellington, [NZ]. Underpinning their approach for students in the equivalent of Years 10, 11 and 12 were the following notions about leadership:
- Leadership without integrity is ‘just a performance’
- Leadership is about responsibility and service (not prestige)
- The transformative power of leadership is crucial
- Great leaders leave an imprint on the hearts and minds of others
In designing programmes, they also targeted three personal qualities for development - tenacity, integrity and resilience - based on research that identifies these qualities as being key personal characteristics essential to the success of young people who will enter the world beyond School in the next decade. Notes from this workshop have been distributed to staff and to Year 11 and in a series of lunch meetings in Weeks 1 and 2 of next term Year 11 will join me, with staff, to consider these ideas and their relevance to our leadership practices.
Enrichment and Inspiration:
- This week’s Year 11/12 ‘around the kitchen table’ discussion led by Mrs Buick, Mr de St Guillaume and Year 12 table hosts, focused on the human rights issues surrounding the elections in Zimbabwe;
- The Daily Bulletin has a ‘new look’. On the flip side of the daily notices, faculties have undertaken to provide a weekly focus for Form discussion each morning, with HSIE initiating the process with news bulletins on Fuel, Famine and Food Security;
- This week Year 11 met Professor Mark Adams, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources for an evening presentation. A specialist in Australia’s ‘high country’ and in sustainable plant ecology, he spoke of his research related to carbon, food and water in relation to sustainable farming. Professor Adams is an internationally recognised scientist who leads an international team of scientists working in this area and also in other areas of plant ecology;
- For the final week of the July vacation and the first two weeks of next term we will be hosting from the Kaifeng School in China, two senior students, Li Yatian and Shangguan Qiizi and one of their teachers, Juan Yingpin. Whilst our guests will stay on campus during term time, they will be hosted initially by Frensham families to whom we are most grateful for their generous offer of hospitality;
- Ms Jenny O’Rourke’s expertise in the teaching of Mathematics was shared with Gib Gate parents this week in a workshop designed to assist parents in understanding the changes in process and practice of helping students to think mathematically;
- Four young musicians from the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney captured the attention of instrumentalists in a one-hour after-dinner Concert in School Hall arranged by Mr Spencer and supported by Ms Madden;
- Mrs Symons heads to Oxford University on Friday of this week for her three-week Summer School in Literature at Exeter College. With 7kgs of reading material and one-on-one tutorials ahead, we wish Mrs Symons every success in her studies;
- With great anticipation I will be travelling to Harvard University, Boston for a ten-day Principals’ Centre programme (10-18 July) entitled Managing the Evolving Vision. With the early preparation of pre-reading and submission of a proposal for study completed several months ago I look forward to the opportunity to study again, albeit briefly, in such a magnificent centre of learning.
- Recently awarded a Girdle for Gymnastics, Stephanie Wright is acknowledged for her tireless efforts in support of the team of gymnasts whose training season covers four terms of each year. Particularly skilled and patient in her work with juniors, Stephanie sets an outstanding example of leadership to those with whom she trains and competes.
- Last week we received two letters of appreciation from Mittagong residents – from the Napier family, owners of injured Cyclops (with his distinct paw print on the card) and from a neighbour who was recently assisted by a student when her house alarm was activated. The opportunity to acknowledge quiet, generous effort is always appreciated.
- Guest speaker at Fellowship’s Birthday Dinner following the Annual General Meeting, Old Girl Mrs Joanne Pollard (Barbato, 1983), inspired those in attendance when she shared her work/life story, reflecting on the personal qualities and relationships crucial to her success. Around 100 Old Girls gathered for this year’s Birthday celebration in Sydney.
Staffing:
- With thanks for their work in support and care of students we thank House staff leaving us at the end of this term: Mrs Juliet Chester and Mrs Helen French and offer our best wishes for years ahead. Having moved recently to Sydney, Mrs French will be continuing in her career as a House Mistress after five years of valued service to Frensham;

At the most recent Board of Directors meeting it was a great honour to be elected as Chairman and I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Board on projects and events ahead of us, including the forthcoming Song Company Performance in July and the Bush Dance to be held in September of this year.
The Foundation is currently refocusing attention on the Centenary Appeal to ensure the entire Winifred West Schools community is behind the major fundraising activities in the lead up to the Frensham Centenary in 2013.
I would like to remind you that the Cocktail Party and The Song Company performance entitled Waltzing Matilda will be held at the end of the first week of Term 3 on Saturday 26 July. I would urge you to book your tickets prior to the end of this term, as places are limited. The Cocktail Party commences at 5pm and the performance at 6.30pm. This is an exceptional opportunity to hear Australia’s leading vocal ensemble perform here in Clubbe Hall, and we hope that many of you will be able to join us.
Tickets are $50 per person.

GIB GATE
All parents who attended the ‘Mathematics in Action’ Parent workshop last Thursday were keen to participate in the hands-on tasks. Through these they gained a new appreciation of how important it is for students to problem-solve and communicate their thinking and strategies with others. Ms O’Rourke, who organised the workshop, started the session with a five minute ‘mental warm up’ as an example of how students practise mental computation skills on a daily basis at Gib Gate.
After a brief introduction to the Kindergarten to Year 10 Mathematics Framework parents were then asked to form into small groups to try some of the Numeracy tasks in which students take part from Kindergarten to Year 6. While parents were playing games focusing on addition and subtraction, chance, money and place value and participating in a problem-solving activity on fractions, decimals and percentages, Ms O’Rourke modelled how teachers at Gib Gate ask students questions to elicit understanding and how they share strategies. Ms O’Rourke also modelled how tasks are adjusted to suit the needs of different learners through changing the type of dice used and through increasing the challenge by working with higher numbers.
Working mathematically through questioning, applying strategies, communicating, reasoning and reflecting are an important parts of the Mathematics programme at Gib Gate and this was very evident throughout the workshop.
Year 5 students have recently completed a unit of work on Machines in Science and Technology. As part of this unit, they conducted a scientific investigation on friction through riding their bikes on different surfaces around the school grounds. In the lead up to this highly engaging activity, students learnt to identify the different variables that could affect the validity of their investigation and they carefully planned how they would measure, record and communicate their findings. Skills in working scientifically and working mathematically were therefore explicit in this learning experience.
Ms Sally Robson, Head of Gib Gate
Curriculum Insights
ICAS Competitions in Science and Writing, run by the University of New South Wales, have been completed by students in Years 3 - 6 during Term 2. Sixty-two students elected to participate in the Science paper during Week 5 which assessed their accumulated knowledge, investigative, prediction and inferential skills across a range of scientific content areas. Sixty-five students entered the Writing Competition in Week 7 where they were required to begin a narrative demonstrating both their imaginative and practical skills in response to a visual stimulus. Results are sent to the school in Term 3 and all students will receive a certificate of participation during Performance Assembly. Students are looking forward to completing the Mathematics and English Competitions in Term 3.
Each student and class is preparing for one of the School’s favourite events of the year – Children’s Book Week at Gib Gate 2008. Book Week will be celebrated during Week 4 of Term 3 and this year’s theme is ‘Reading Down Under’. On Monday 11 August, popular Australian children’s author Richard Tulloch will be our visiting storyteller and he is guaranteed to entertain all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 with his humorous tales. Most famous for his children’s books Barry the Burglar, Being Bad for the Babysitter and Stories from our Street, Richard is also acclaimed nationally and internationally for writing a number of play and TV scripts including many of the ABC’s Bananas in Pyjamas episodes.
On Friday 16 August Mrs Marsh is organising a Book Character Parade and Book Fair where children and families are encouraged to ‘double the literary delight’ by purchasing one book for themselves to share at home and one for the Gib Gate Library for all to share for many years to come. The Character Parade will commence at 8.45 am in the Hall with everyone dressed as a character from a favourite Australian book or poem or a famous Australian author or poet. This year there is a new rule for readers: each student (and teacher) must carry (at all times) the book ‘from which they escaped’, so others can have a quick read throughout the day.
FOGG representatives are planning the annual Book Day Feast for the lunchtime Transition to Year 6 celebration and all are welcome to join us throughout the day’s variety of literary activities.

Music and Extra Curricular Activities
On Sunday 15 June, 14 Gib Gate string players joined 80 other students from the local area to participate in a string workshop. There were four orchestras of varying difficulty with Mrs Graham conducting one. Gib Gate students were involved in three different orchestras and enjoyed the experience of working with different conductors and a full string sound. Parents came for an informal recital at the end of the day and were impressed by the work accomplished in one day.
Extra curricular activities
The Puppet class performed a puppet show for the School on Friday 20 June. This showcased the semester of making the puppets and formulating a show and it was well-received be everyone.
Extra curricular classes will commence at the start of Term 3. Students who are unsuccessful in their enrolment will be notified.
Gib Gate Sport
It has been another full term of sport with winter sports well under way and all teams training and playing with great commitment. This term there have been visits from The Hockey Association, The NSW AFL and the NSW Football Association who have all conducted very valuable skills clinics with all classes from Kindergarten to Year 6.
The five Netta and Netball teams are well placed to contest the finals. The Under 6, Under 7 and Under 9 Rooball teams are enjoying themselves immensely with the Under 7s playing well enough to win the local Gala Day midway through the term. The Hockey and Minkey Teams are very competitive this year and it is pleasing to see the development in their individual skills and team work.
Gib Gate hosted the Southern Highlands Independent Schools (SHIPS) Cross Country Carnival at Frensham earlier in the term. It was a very successful day with Gib Gate runners achieving the first top three places in each age group. The CIS Cross Country Carnival was held at Eastern Creek on 20 June with Lilli Jephcott and Olivia Spring (Year 6) and Emil Thaning (Year 3) qualifying for this event.
In preparation for the Athletics carnivals coming up next term, each class has been involved in a series of clinics conducted by either Little Athletics NSW or Ron Thompson, a very experienced athletics coach. The children have learnt to refine their techniques for sprinting, throwing and jumping. The Gib Gate School Carnival will be held on Friday 1 August with the SHIPS and JSHAA Carnivals to follow soon after.

Included with this Newsletter are Extra Subject Enrolment Forms for Term 3. If your daughter wishes to enrol in a new Extra Subject in Term 3 you must complete and submit a Form by the due date. These include: Sturt Activities, Dance Lessons, Tennis Coaching and Horse Riding.
The only exception to this is Instrumental Music Lessons with the assumption that your daughter will continue her current lessons. You would only complete a form if your daughter was taking up a lesson for the first time in Term 3.
For the safety of all, parents are reminded that all Day Boarders should be dropped-off and picked-up from their Boarding Houses for all before and after-school activities.
Mr Geoff Marsh, Deputy Head
Director of Studies
Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have by now received their vacation work for the upcoming break. While the requirements for each year group vary, the premise behind vacation work remains very similar. It is important for students to have a refreshing holiday but it is also expected that they use a portion of their three weeks to review and revise first Semester work and prepare for upcoming examinations.
Year 10 students are expected to complete 1½ hours per subject; Year 11 students are required to complete three hours per 2 Unit subject and Year 12 have individual schedules to prepare them for the HSC Trial Examinations beginning in Week 2, Term 3. The work which has been designed includes a variety of activities such as: completing past HSC examinations, ensuring study notes are adequate, practice exercises for various subjects and/or preparation for upcoming HSC Practical Examinations or Major Works.
This week Reports for Years 7 to 10 have been posted and parents are reminded to contact us immediately with any queries about these or about any aspect of their daughter’s progress.
Mr Matthew McMahon, Director of Studies
Director of Boarding
Last Sunday morning Year 12 led the Service in School Hall and began with the following: “Charles Conlon once said ‘True friendship is like good health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost’. The importance of friendship has been echoed throughout history from Shakespeare to the Beatles. What constitutes a real friend? Is it constant company? Is it someone who flatters – indulging your ego? Perhaps friendships are constructed on these rocky foundations but it is those relationships rooted in kindness, selflessness and love which stand firm throughout time. Today it is appropriate to reflect on what a true friend really is and how, in our own lives, we can be better friends to those we care about.”
The following poem, read as part of the Service, is one which parents might like to discuss with their children:
A Portrait of a Friend
I can’t give you solutions to all of life’s problems, doubts or fears.
But I can listen to you, and together we will search for answers.
I can’t change your past with all its heartache and pain,
Nor the future with its untold stories.
But I can be here now when you need me to care.
I can’t keep your feet from stumbling,
I can only offer my hand that you may grasp it and not fall.
Your joys, triumphs, successes, and happiness are not mine, yet I can share in your laughter.
Your decisions in life are not mine to make, nor to judge,
I can only support you, encourage you and help you when you ask.
I can’t prevent you failing away from friendship,
From your values, from me, I can only pray for you, talk to you and wait for you.
I can’t give you boundaries which I have determined for you,
But I can give you the room to change, room to grow,
Room to be yourself.
I can’t keep your heart from breaking and hurting,
But I can cry
With you and help you pick up the pieces and put
Them back in place.
I can’t tell you who you are.
I can only love you and be your friend.
The service was preceded by a surprise breakfast at McCarthy for Year 12 organised by Year 11, to thank Year 12 for their friendship.
Mrs Susan Cyganiewicz & Mrs Ros Buick, Co-Directors of Boarding
English and Drama
On Wednesday 25 June, Victoria Steadman-Towell and Lucinda Reynolds from Year 11 Drama will perform a dualogue between Olivia and Viola from William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, at the Illawarra Shakespeare festival at St Mary’s Star of the Sea School in Wollongong, under the direction of Mrs Muir-Smith. This is a new competition in 2008.
Madeleine Bowdern in Year 8 has received a Highly Commended Certificate in the Sydney Writer’s Festival Write Now Competition. From 3,800 entries only ten students in each year group received this commendation.
As the term draws to a close there is much progress evident with Debating and Public Speaking. Ms Samuels is working with the Year 10 team on pairs debates and Sarah Hayes and Charlotte Merz, Heads of Debating and Public Speaking, have formed a group with students in Years 7-9. Two Year 9 students have been preparing for the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition which will be held at Frensham on 1 August. Each day, all girls in their Year 9 class prepare a two minute impromptu to help develop skills in the presentation of these particular speeches. Two or three students speak each day and the class shares its differing interpretations of the topic set.
Lucinda Nicolls Small in Year 11 will be speaking in the Rotary 4 Ways Speaking Competition for Berrima District Rotary on 30 July.
Extension 2 Major Works are nearing completion as final drafts have been submitted with journals and the Report assessment task. This is the final stage in the process for this course which constitutes 50% of the final mark. The Work itself is then submitted to the Board of Studies for marking.
Mrs Trish Symons, Director Language/Arts
HSIE
Year 12 History Extension students will submit their final Research Projects this week. These projects are the culmination of over six months of hard work and it is clear that much thought, research and time have gone into them.
While students have been required to ensure that their projects cover the key historiographical questions which are part of the Board of Studies syllabus, they have chosen to focus their research around a wide ranging selection of very particular topics.
The topics for 2008 are: the history of the Mau Mau & perceptions of Kenyan identity; the power of Eleanor of Aquitaine; perceptions about women in the Crusades; the Glencoe Massacre; social historians’ coverage of the Industrial Revolution; East and West German treatment of the Holocaust post World War II; the history of Cleopatra; changing perceptions about Marie Antoinette; the psychohistory surrounding Francisco Franco; the veracity of the history surrounding Idi Amin; the Rwandan genocide, the influence of both Darwin and eugenics on Hitler, and; varying interpretations of the Turkish seizure of Cyprus.
Students are to be commended for their hard work and the great interest which they have brought to their historical studies.
Mr Matthew McMahon, HSIE Coordinator

On Wednesday 18 June, Years 9 and 10 students travelled to SHORE, North Sydney, to take part in the annual Kevin Lee Latin Quiz. The quiz was started eight years ago to commemorate the life of Professor Kevin Lee, Professor of Classics at the University of Sydney, who had died unexpectedly several years before. He encouraged the study of all aspects of the Classics. Frensham has participated in the Quiz for the last three years.
There are two levels of the Quiz, a mixed team of Years 7-9 and a Year 10 team. Each team has two chances: a preliminary heat and then a repechage for those eliminated from their heat. The Year 9 team, consisting of Hannah Beith, Rosetta Freelander, Cassandra Perry and Emma Quinn, won their repechage and went through to the final. Frensham and Kinross Wolaroi, the other finalist, ended with equal scores, requiring a playoff. Frensham won on the third question, “What is the river which flows through Rome” the answer the Tiber.
The team was presented with a plaque which will be inscribed with the School’s name and will be kept until the Quiz next year.
Gaudeamus igitur!
Ms Liz Stephenson, Latin Teacher
Music
Frensham recently hosted a String Day Camp at Clubbe Hall, with students of string instruments from all over the region coming together to form four separate orchestras, catering for differing abilities from preschool to high school students. Frensham is particularly well suited for such an event with rehearsal spaces such as School Hall, the Drama Theatre and the Orchestra Room in addition to Clubbe Hall. Frensham students benefited greatly from this opportunity to work with other enthusiastic young musicians and to bring an intense focus to the development of their skills on their instruments and in playing together in an ensemble.
On Monday night, the School hosted a concert by four outstanding performers from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Frensham students of the cello, flute, clarinet and guitar were able to enjoy a programme which featured their instruments and to hear these young musicians talk about the repertoire they were presenting.

The Science Faculty has been reviewing a number of the units of work which have been taught this Term. These reviews are designed to ensure that the material covered matches the syllabus outcomes and is stimulating and appropriate for the classes involved. The method of delivery is reviewed, as well as the resources in place for the practical components of the course. The Faculty is also reviewing the level of differentiation in each class to meet the needs of all students.
Mr Peter Bull, Laboratory Assistant, recently sat his final Physics 101 Examination at the University of Wollongong. This comprises part of the course work he is completing to gain his teaching qualification.
Mr Geoff Marsh, Deputy Head
Visual Arts
Congratulations to Sophie Bligh, Emily Cameron and Olivia Stewart on their selection in the HSC Intensive Studio Practice course at the National Art School in Sydney. This course, run in the July and September vacation periods, provides the opportunity for students who are already achieving at a high level in Year 11 Visual Arts to extend their skills in a range of disciplines. Both Sophie and Emily will participate in the Sculpture course and Olivia will participate in the Printmaking course. We look forward to hearing of their experiences when School resumes.
