TERM 3 NO 1 - 24 JULY 2008

Winifred West Schools

According to Norman Kunc (author of The Need to Belong: Rediscovering Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs) the message all students need to hear is: ‘You are capable, you are connected, you count!’

In his address, Beyond Benevolence: A New Take on Inclusive Education, Kunc highlighted the negative repercussions of conditional belonging as opposed to the approach which acknowledges that belonging is an inherent need of all people and must not be reserved solely for ‘the best of us.’  ‘If we continue to engender a feeling that worth as an individual is contingent upon being able to jump through the prescribed academic, physical or personal hoops we ignore their need to belong.’

Five years ago when Kunc presented as part of the Harvard University Summer School for Principals he focused on educational inclusion for students with physical and mental disability.  Now, he is applying his thinking to all children: Inclusion is all about school culture….and what we are witnessing…are the symptoms of a society in which self-hatred or feelings of personal inadequacy are so common in our schools that we have begun to assume that they are part of the nature of being human…

At Gib Gate and Frensham we constantly assess our efforts to engender a strong sense of community through building shared expectations and responsibilities: the duty to support and encourage others in their development and the responsibility to be the best we can be in order to be of service to others – in essence, the values we share as we strive to achieve excellence in all we do, in a spirit of service, humility and contribution to our community and beyond.

In starting the new term, welcoming new staff and students, I drew from Kunc’s research and his life experience in managing disability, to highlight the expectations and responsibilities we share.

GIB GATE

The last week of Term 2 was an eventful week for a number of Gib Gate students.  On Monday 23 June, Year 5 students accompanied by Mrs Venish enjoyed Sample High School Day at Frensham.  This day is an important part of the Stage 3 experience at Gib Gate and is designed to help prepare students for entry to Year 7.  The day began with an introduction to the high school experience by Ms Gillick.  Students were then taken on tours of the campus by host students from Year 9 and were able to gain an insight to high school from a student’s point of view.  They then experienced a number of sample high school lessons which included a lesson in the Drama studio with Mrs Muir-Smith, a Science lesson in one of the Frensham Science Labs with Mrs McGregor, an Art lesson with Mr Alldis in the Art Studio and an English lesson with Mrs Symons.  During morning tea and lunch a number of senior staff were able to answer any questions about what they had experienced and what to expect when they enter Year 7 in 2010.

On Tuesday 24 June, Year 6 students hosted a display of models and design portfolios developed as part of the studies in HSIE.  The students brief had been to design a shelter for the new drop-off and collection area in the Gib Gate car park, taking into account the environmental impact of their choice of building materials, structural design and landscaping as well as meeting the needs of the school and aesthetic considerations.  The Year designs reflected the knowledge students had gained through working with experts such as Architect, Ms Wheeler, Winifred West Schools’ Business Manager, Mr Duck and Landscape Designer, Mr Purvis.  Talking to students about their design choices reinforced how much they value authentic and engaging projects such as this.

Transition enjoyed a special culminating activity on the last day of Term 2.  Throughout the term Preschool Transition students had been investigating flight and travel.  After a tour of Mascot Airport, the class set up its own mock airport and aeroplane in Preschool.  With passports in hand they passed through airport security and were welcomed onboard by the Captain before watching a demonstration of the safety procedures.  An inflight meal kindly cooked by Mrs Janz, provided much excitement before the class disembarked in New York.

On Friday 27 June, Gib Gate staff participated in a Winifred West Professional development day which focused on Child Protection.  This important staff course complemented units of work undertaken by Gib Gate students from Kindergarten to Year 6 during Term 2, focusing on Primary Protective Behaviours.

Gib Gate Semester One Reports were posted to all parents on Friday 27 June.  These reports provide parents with an overview of individual progress in the form of teacher comments and grades.  Information provided allows parents to see how many children in each class received a particular grade.  Please note that Semester One reports form one part of the reporting process.  Parent/Teacher interviews also play an essential role in the reporting process and parents are encouraged to make an appointment with their child’s teacher so that the School and parents can work together to ensure each child is reaching his/her full potential.  Parents are welcome to contact the School should they have any questions or concerns regarding the reports and their child’s progress.

Ms Sally Robson, Head of Gib Gate

Curriculum Insights
Term 3 will be a stimulating time for all students at Gib Gate as we prepare for the diverse range of learning experiences in the next few weeks.

On Tuesday of Week 2, 65 students from Years 3 to 6 will compete in the ICAS Mathematics Competition.  Students enjoy this opportunity to take up the challenge of answering mathematical problems and utilising and applying all the skills and strategies they have learned in this Key Learning Area.  In Week 4 the ICAS English Competition will take place.  This also falls within Gib Gate’s Book Week, so the reading of and responding to a diverse range of literary texts as required in the competition will add to the school’s focus on the importance of fostering enjoyment of quality children’s literature.

During the holiday students and parents were preparing the costumes based on the character students wish to portray for Book Week 2008 at Gib Gate.  The theme this year is Reading Down Under.  The visit of Richard Tulloch, the guest author of children’s fiction on Monday 11 August begins the celebrations.  The culmination will be the annual Dress Up Parade, Literary Lunch and Book Fair on Friday 15 August.

The Book Fair on Friday has a large range of carefully selected books which will appeal to all students from Preschool to Year 6 in a variety of formats and genres.  It aims to provide all readers with ‘the right book at the right time’ to continue to reinforce their appreciation and love of literature and reading.

With the approaching visit of students from Hokuriku Gakuin school during Week 5, units of work in HSIE commenced last term will continue to stimulate the children to learn all they can about the visitors, their school, home and family lives and their country.  Year 6 students will prepare written and spoken introductions for each visiting child to be shared with the school throughout the coming weeks.  All classes are involved with designing and making small gifts for the guests and preparing a variety of class and outdoor activities and performances for the visit.

In addition to these whole school events, throughout this term, small groups of students will be working on their Tournament of Minds problem, Robocup entries and Maths Olympiad.  Class teaching and learning programmes will also include excursions to a diverse range of locations including Taronga Zoo, Canberra Zoo, Minnamurra Rainforest, the Bowral School House Museum and Kanazawa Japan.

Sturt Gallery
The current exhibitionReflections on a Hill End Residency – Paintings and Pastels by Goulburn artist Lynne Flemons was opened on the weekend by Sandra McMahon, Director of Tamworth Regional Gallery.  The exhibition continues until 24 August 2008.

An extract from Lynne’s artist statement follows:
‘I imagined Hill End would be dry and brown – we had four inches of rain in one night.  It was green and lush in the European centre of the village and in the bush around were the more subtle, rich earth colours that began to seep in to my pastel works and paintings once back in my studio in Goulburn.’
The full statement can be read at Sturt Gallery.

Sturt Winter School
114 students participated in 14 classes (including ten children making clay sculptures with Sue Buckle).  The weather was fine but cold and all involved worked hard in their chosen field.  The impressive results of the week were shown off in each class at the final walk around.  A selection of images from the Winter School can be viewed on the Sturt website:  www.sturt.nsw.edu.au/course_winter.htm

Artists-in-Residence
Annie Trevillian (screen printer) and Monique Van Nieuwland (weaver) have just completed their 12-week residency at Sturt, funded in part by Friends of Sturt.  They each taught successful classes for the Winter School - Annie in fabric printing and Monique in gauze leno weaving.  Their visual presentations during the Winter School week were well attended and gave further insight into their lives as practising artists.

A work from Annie’s exhibition at Sturt Gallery has been purchased by the National Gallery of Australia.

Twelve-Week Fine Woodworking Course
The second of Sturt’s 12-week courses is now under way with Roy Schack, designer and furniture maker from Queensland as teacher. FRENSHAM

Deputy Head

The beginning of Term 3 involves numerous events including:

  • IGSSA Hockey and Netball
  • Continuation of the Junior Production Rehearsals.
  • The start of auditions for the Christmas Production
  • Year 11 Lunch Meetings with Ms Gillick.

Most Extra-Curricular Activities begin this week and the School Netball and Hockey teams are looking forward to the start of the IGSSA season this weekend.  The first Closed Weekend of Term will involve Year Groups in a number of activities including Hockey and Netball Clinics on Sunday.

Preparations are also underway for the upcoming Year 9 and Year 11 Parent Weekends and the Year 10 Goal Setting interviews.

Mr Geoff Marsh, Deputy Head

Director of Studies

Year 12 students have returned refreshed and eager to embrace the remainder of their HSC studies.  Next week they will begin their Trial HSC Examinations and it is clear that much work (compilation of study notes, past examination practice, revision and study) has been completed in the lead-up to the examinations.  Furthermore, considerable effort has been put into HSC Major Works and in the preparation for HSC Practical Examinations.

The HSC Trial examinations will run from Monday 28 July – Friday 8 August and are not only key parts of the learning process but excellent practice for what students can expect in October and November of this year.  These examinations also serve as a major part of internal HSC assessment marks in most subjects.

Last term Year 12 students were given information highlighting the rules relating to this Trial Examination Period and they have been reminded this term of their responsibilities during this examination block.  Year 12 parents are given an interim report soon after the completion of these examinations which will include an overview of student HSC Trial marks across their patterns of study.

Year 10 Parents will receive a letter outlining details of the Year 10 Goal Setting Interviews on 9 August.  The afternoon itself involves an half-hour interview with a senior member of staff and an important plenary session which details the process for subject selection, Board of Studies regulations and useful information about procedures leading to a student’s senior courses.  In the period before these interviews, Year 10 students will have completed a questionnaire which covers such topics as study techniques, approach to study, career planning, initial subject planning and School extra-curricular involvement.

On Tuesday 29 July, students in Years 7 to 10 and Year 11 Extension Mathematics will complete the ICAS Mathematics Competition.

Mr Matthew McMahon, Director of Studies

Director of Boarding

The School welcomed back excited students who obviously had a good break with family and friends. We also welcomed new boarders and two exchange students from China who, with their teacher, will be here for the next two weeks.

Girls in Years 10 and 11 have moved to new Houses.  We look forward to working with the new Heads of Houses and assisting them in their new leadership roles.

Year 12 has begun immediately to finalise their preparations for the upcoming Higher School Certificate Trial examinations and their progress will be carefully monitored, in the lead up to their final examinations.

Mrs Susan Cyganiewicz & Mrs Ros Buick, Co-Directors of Boarding

English and Drama

On the second last day of Term 2 Mrs Muir-Smith accompanied two Year 11 students, Victoria Steadman-Towell and Lucinda Reynolds, to Wollongong to compete in the Illawarra Shakespeare Festival.  The competition was held at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea College and several schools participated.  The Frensham students were entered in the Duologue section and performed a piece from Twelfth Night, playing Olivia and Viola respectively.  The performance was outstanding and culminated with Lucinda winning the award for Best Senior Actor, against 60 other students.

Over the next two weeks, students will be involved in a range of Public Speaking activities.  As foreshadowed at the end of Term 2 Frensham is again hosting the Legacy Plain English Speaking regional Final on Friday 1 August.  On 30 July, Lucinda Nicolls Small will speak at the Berrima District Rotary meeting in the Rotary 4 Way Speaking Competition. On 19 August, two students in each year group from Year 7-11 will be involved in the annual South Coast Public Speaking evening held at Holy Spirit College at Bellambi. Throughout the Term, all teams entered in the sections for the AHIGS festival of Speech will be preparing.

Students in Year 11 Advanced English are beginning the Term completing their detailed study of the poetry of T S Eliot.  In Week 3 they begin their introduction to Transformations with a module on Emma by Jane Austen and the film Clueless.  Year 11 Standard English will be completing the Module on Indigenous writing and commencing the Poetry study.

Year 10 English begin the study of Satire using Lord of the Flies as the staring point for discussion and Year 9 study To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee as the springboard for a thematic study on Discrimination and Tolerance.

Mrs Trish Symons, Director Language/Arts

Teaching and Learning

During the break, most of us would have watched, or even been involved in, our children’s use of digital communications technologies, possibly watching a recently released movie or DVD, text messaging family and friends, online chatting, online shopping, blogging or gaming via a PC or Nintendo.

A new book by Professor Karen Brooks, Consuming Innocence (University of Queensland Press, 2008), offers 21st Century parents advice on fulfilling their role in a media-saturated world.  Professor Brooks writes in a conversational style to convey principles based on a thorough review of modern research (there are more than 30 pages of endnotes documenting her sources).  Brooks’ recommendations include:

  • Don’t allow children to watch movies or television programmes rated as suitable for children in an older age range.
  • Even if the rating matches your child’s age, be prepared to prevent your child watching movies with scenes which are emotionally or socially unsuitable for him or her.  The rating judgements are now quite liberal in comparison to a decade ago.
  • Personally watch at least one or two episodes of any programme your child views.
  • Watch any movie your child views and be ready to discuss key ideas and scenes in terms of your family and community values.
  • Read and familiarise your children with the traditional text versions of fairytales so that they notice modifications made for movie versions (modern versions tend to reward beauty rather than character).
  • Encourage the critical literacy taught as part of the English curriculum in schools.
  • Minimise screen time, not because the media content can harm but because of all the other enriching things which aren’t being done while a child is viewing TV or movies.
  • Never put TVs in bedrooms.  Computers with web access should remain in shared rooms in the house where subtle, but vigilant supervision can be maintained.
  • Get some first hand experience of blogging, online chatrooms and the virtual world so discussion between you and your child about internet use and internet safety is possible.
  • Learn ways to be cyber safe and make sure your child knows and adopts them.

“…we should be thinking about popular culture.  We should be striving to understand the multiple roles it plays in shaping our children’s sense of self, our culture and the future… children are not a critical audience in the same sense adults are… they require us to reflect and make decisions based on information and some foresight and then pass on our knowledge so we can teach them to think for themselves and make wiser consumption choices.  But we can only do this successfully... if we know what it is we are allowing our children to access and how this can potentially affect them-in good and bad ways” (Brooks, 2008, p253).

Japanese News
The School welcomes Miss Chihiro Takahashi as the Japanese assistant for this term.  ‘Chihiro’ is the name of the heroine in Spirited Away, the award-winning animé at the Cannes Film Festival which is prescribed for study in the 2008/2009 Extension course.  Students of Japanese, therefore, should have no difficulty remembering her name.

While at Frensham, Chihiro will be working closely with students from all classes, assisting them with their vocabulary retention, and of course with their conversation skills.  In particular she will be helping Year 12 students practise for the HSC Speaking Skills examinations which will take place this term, on the 23 and 30 August.

Mrs Adrienne Bradney-Smith, Japanese Teacher

Music

Term 3 will be an exciting one with special events to look forward to such as the Fellowship Soirées on the Year 11 Parent Weekend and the Bushdance in September, both of which will feature Student performances.  These are in addition to the usual musical highlights which are a part of the Year 9 and 11 Parent Weekends.

In the immediate future, the entire community is invited to attend the performance this Saturday 26 July of the Song Company’s concert Waltzing Matilda, in support of WWS Foundation.  Senior Choir members are particularly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to hear one of the finest vocal ensembles in the country.

Hockey and Netball
The IGSSA Competition for Hockey and Netball starts this Saturday 26 July.  All girls have been placed in a team and training has commenced.  This term we have 11 Hockey teams and 12 Netball teams.

A reminder that mouth guards and shin guards are compulsory for all Hockey training sessions and matches.

All girls are expected to be at the playing fields half an hour before their match starts every Saturday in full sports uniform.

Draw changes can occur at short notice so please check with your daughter each week or check the IGSSA website. http://igssa.ahigs.nsw.edu.au

In the holidays a group of Senior Hockey players attended a two-day clinic at Cintra Park, Concord, Sydney and the girls learnt a great deal during the two days.  Thanks to Mrs Penny King and Mrs Pippa Beak for transporting the girls and to the Beak family who accommodated most of the girls for the camp. Their generosity and hospitality is greatly appreciated.

Snow Sports
Congratulations to the 29 girls who participated in the Northern NSW Interschools Championships in fine weather at Thredbo during the holidays.  We had a successful round of skiing performing beyond expectation in many categories.  Frensham for the first time won the Northern Region Alpine Championship School and also won the Northern Region Overall Championship School (Category 1- teams larger than 25 members).  Every skier gave her best and the results were outstanding, particularly considering that many skiers were skiing competitively for the first time.  A number of teams (top three placings) will now go through to the State Round at Thredbo on 28 – 31 August.  Team members will be advised by the end of this week.
