TERM 3 NO 5 - 18 SEPTEMBER 2008

Re-shaping experience – living within a community…how we respond
As I noted to parents at the Frensham Information evening last Thursday: ‘My perception of excellence in Boarding School education continues to be challenged and re-shaped by the experience of living with the young women of this School…. sharing responsibility with their parents for their growth and achievement and working alongside staff keen to make a difference’… Amidst the crescendo of the academic year for our seniors about to close, Year 12 Reports being finalised and commentary for the final events of the term being written (as well as the excited anticipation of Foundation’s Bush Dance) some recent moments have sparked for me a re-shaping and re-definition of excellence – setting new benchmarks against which to assess our progress…
First, in discussion with a colleague this week about the academic strengths of Year 12 it was noted that, ‘Many of the girls exhibit deep understanding of their subjects, showing the ability both in writing and in discussion to link threads of philosophical thought across disciplines’ – their understanding of literature related to their understanding of art theory or their contextual knowledge of history supporting their independent research in musicology… ‘…and they enjoy the opportunity to debate, to ask questions and to absorb others’ ideas…’ There is no doubt that the chance to live and study with peers whose areas of expertise differ from your own can add greatly to the richness of experience gained at school…
Second, in their support and leadership of each facet of Sample Boarding, from the preparation of personal spaces to accommodate a visitor, to the shadowing of guests overnight and for a full day of classes and the willingness to act as tour guides or ‘Arrival valets’, student hosts exuded grace, confidence and a keenness to enhance others’ short experience with us.
Third, generous commentary by seniors in reference to musical performance, Festival of Speech achievements, sporting success and outstanding academic achievement has been matched by appreciation expressed to those who have acted in support of, or simply given time to be present for, those active in developing and testing their talents and skills.
Fourth, and most important, it is in our individual and collective response to disappointment, error and breakdown in communication that the excellence to which we aspire is most clearly tested. Prefect Elections this week will result in elation for some and disappointment for many, examinations results for juniors may elicit similar feelings, Room or House allocations for next term will mean some will feel confident, others nervous about impending change…. Other challenges will arise where friendships lose or gain strength and where errors of judgement lead to repercussions or disciplinary intervention…
How staff, parents and peers respond to these situations will determine the resilience of those affected and, according to Year 12, ‘...the best thing for a parent to do is to set the highest expectations, make you accept responsibility for what has gone wrong and help you see that things will get better or that you don’t always get what you want…and that’s OK…’
Enrichment and Inspiration
This Newsletter contains details of what staff and students report as a fortnight of inspirational events, on so many different levels:
- The entire English and Drama faculty, with support from Ms Bradley (HSIE) guided our AHIGS Festival of Speech team to outstanding results last Saturday…;
- Fathers at Gib Gate were hosted by children and staff in challenging activities where sharing of recently acquired knowledge was the focus…;
- The Pieces of Eight Exhibition opened at Sturt Gallery last weekend has showcased a team of young jewellers from Melbourne breaking new ground in the artistic world of handcrafted jewellery-making;
- China de la Vega (2000) shared insights into her work in remote areas of Australia, working with indigenous artists, leaving Year 12 astounded by her achievements. Particularly, girls noted the example China has set of how much can be accomplished for others when someone decides to share and develop their talents;
- Final rehearsals for Gib Gate’s Junior Production and for the Frensham Year 8/9 Production reveal the hard work and skills of staff and students to prepare for public performances in Clubbe Hall this week;
- Both the quality of performance and the range of musical genre showcased in this year’s Higher School Certificate Music class in their Friday 5 September Concert drew a warm response from the large audience. The instrumental expertise of music tutors/professional musicians Paul Doyle, Luke O’Neill and Christine Tilley alongside music staff was an additional highlight of the ensemble work presented.
- Michael Spencer’s choral setting of the Lord’s Prayer for the School was rehearsed this week in preparation for Sunday’s Parent Reunion Service in Clubbe Hall (11.00am) giving students a chance to experience the joy of a composer hearing his original work performed for the first time;
- The parent organisers of the Bush Dance have continued to work quietly but with huge enthusiasm to generate what promises to be a fabulous night of fun and entertainment, simply for the sake of generating the sense of community that we cherish and also the resources for Foundation to achieve its goal of supporting the achievement of Excellence in Education for Winifred West Schools.

GIB GATE
The Father’s Day Breakfast on Friday 5 September was a great success. The focus for this year’s event was on Mathematics and everyone approached the associated activities with enthusiasm. Many of the visitors appreciated the opportunity to visit all classrooms from Preschool to Year 6.
With only a few days to go until the Winifred West Schools Foundation Bush Dance there is a great sense of mounting excitement amongst the Gib Gate students and staff who are looking forward to sharing their line dancing skills.
Ms Sally Robson, Head of Gib Gate
Curriculum Insights
The Berkelouw Books Young Writer’s Award 2008 was entered by approximately 300 young writers (aged from 9 to 16 years) from across NSW. Forty Gib Gate students from Years 4 to 6 entered and are commended for their commitment and enthusiasm in producing a high standard of entries. On Sunday 14 September finalists were presented with awards by Australian author Bryce Courtenay at the Berkelouw Book Barn, Berrima.
Olivia Battcock (Year 5) gained second place for her story The $100 Coin and Georgina Harrington (Year 6) was awarded a Highly Commended for her story The Gorilla’s Cry in the 9-12 years age group.
Bryce Courtenay spoke about the writing process, saying he was excited to meet young writers who demonstrated such enthusiasm for practising their story telling skills through writing. He acknowledged that they, like himself, were ‘in the business of making words make sense’ and shared some tips about how to improve. Whilst stating that ‘Writing is truly hard brainwork’, he added that hard work, perseverance, practice and time were four things they all needed to set their imaginations free and allow them to share their stories with readers. Gib Gate looks forward to Olivia and Georgina reading their prize-winning stories to the School during the coming week.
Certificates of achievement in the ICAS Mathematics Competition were awarded to the School’s 62 participants at Performance Assembly on Friday 12 September. The following students were commended for their high level of achievement:

Courses in Fine Woodworking
Toby Muir-Wilson is the teacher for the third Twelve-Week Fine Woodworking Course to be held in 2008 which will commence on Monday 29 September. While Tom Harrington continues to teach the year long course, new teachers are being invited to Sturt to manage twelve-week courses.
From Tasmania, Toby Muir-Wilson has been making furniture for over 30 years. He believes that the making of fine furniture must be based on a thorough understanding of hand skills, knowledge of structures and experience with materials, continuing the philosophy common to all teaching at Sturt. In particular, Toby enjoys using wood sourced not only using sustainable practices, but also wherever possible using wood which has some kind of connection with the client. Tasmanian timber is always a feature in Toby’s work.
John Gallagher is teaching students how to make a small table over four days, in a course to be held in the first week of October. There are positions available in this course, for details please ring Sturt on 4860 2083.
The Sturt School for Wood is now enrolling for 2009. In its 23rd year, the Sturt School for Wood produces some of Australian’s most accomplished designers and makers. This year’s graduates will be showing major projects in the concluding exhibition to be held at Sturt Gallery from 29 November until 14 December.
Sturt Gallery
Quality exhibitions continue, with six young jewellers from Melbourne exhibiting now until 19 October. This exhibition, Pieces of Eight – The Workshop Group, is unusual in that each jeweller shows a desire to explore new ideas and concepts through his/her work. Coming from a diverse range of inspirations to include Australian plant forms, food, love of material and costume jewellery, the six young artists have created works which are fresh, wearable and a delight to acquire.
China – Through the Eyes of Paul Davis
Paul Davis, Sturt potter, travelled to China and Japan in late July this year, visiting famous ceramic sites and exploring potential connections for ongoing development of his own ceramic work. Paul will be talking about his visit, and showing images at Sturt Café on Friday 26 September, at 5.30pm for 6.00pm. Entry is free, wine and orange juice will be served and guests are asked to bring a plate of finger food to share. RSVP to Sturt Gallery 4860 2083 or shop@sturt.nsw.edu.au
For all enquiries regarding courses, exhibitions and events, please ring Sturt on 02 4860 2083 or view the website: www.sturt.nsw.edu.au

FRENSHAM
Deputy Head
With only one week of Term 3 remaining the School is preparing for Term 4 with end-of-year activities, including the major production and the satisfaction in finishing another year.
The calendar for the first two weeks includes:
- Year 12 HSC Examinations commencing on Thursday 16 October;
- The continuation of the End of Year Production rehearsals;
- A Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Silver Expedition will depart the start of Week 2;
- Year 10 Examinations begin in Week 2;
- IGSSA Gymnastics Competition in Week 2.
The School is also looking forward to the start of the IGSSA Cricket competition, Swimming Training Sessions and a Tennis Round Robin Competition.
Mr Geoff Marsh, Deputy Head
Director of Studies
This week Year 7 and 9 National Assessment Programme - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results will be sent to parents. These results are from the national literacy and numeracy assessments which were administered to students across Years 3, 5 7 and 9 throughout Australia in May this year.
The literacy assessment tasks measured student achievement in reading, writing and language conventions while the numeracy assessment measured student achievement across number, algebra, function and pattern; measurement, chance and data; and space.
A student’s results will be shown on achievement scales and are based on bands. The achievement scale, from Band 1 to Band 10 (with Band 10 being the highest), represents increasing levels of skill and understanding across the assessments. The National minimum standard for Year 7 results is Band 5 and for Year 9 is Band 6.
Frensham’s results were above National averages by at least one band across all testing components in Years 7- 9.
Faculties will now analyse the results and address any areas for development highlighted by the tests.
Mr Matthew McMahon, Director of Studies
Director of Boarding
Sample Boarding was an outstanding success. All guests enjoyed themselves and the girls who hosted were impressive in the warm and caring manner with which they greeted and looked after the visitors. A highlight was watching Year 12 students playing games in the Parker Gymnasium with Year 5 girls.
The girls are looking forward to the Bush Dance this weekend and are organising their jeans and checked shirts. Preparations for the Year 12 Dinner next Thursday night are underway, with the theme of this year being Black Tie with a Touch of Copacabana. It is traditional for Year 11 girls to waitress for the evening.
If parents book their daughter’s return to school on Sundays, they should inform the boarding staff of this arrangement. With prior advice the School always meets trains on which students have been booked.
Mrs Susan Cyganiewicz & Mrs Ros Buick, Co-Directors of Boarding
English and Drama
A number of students in Years 7-10 submitted entries in the Berkelouw Books Young Writer’s Award Competition this year. Rosie Latimer, Year 10, was awarded the Second Prize (Voucher for $100) in the Senior Section with a story entitled Notes from the Alley and Madeleine Bowdern, Year 8, a Highly Commended Certificate (Voucher for $75) for her story Through Amal’s Eyes.
On Friday 12 September and Saturday 13 September, the Frensham team of speakers travelled to Meriden and Santa Sabina Schools at Strathfield for the AHIGS Festival of Speech.
The Senior and Junior Debating Teams (Tess Brennan, Sarah Loewy, Alice Lee-Warner, Emma Bowman, Rosetta Freelander, Emma Quinn, Emma Gorman, Harriet Robertson, coached by Mrs Vink and Ms Samuels) and the Senior and Junior Readers (Annika Rookyard and Emily Meredith) attended on Friday night under the guidance of Charlotte Merz Vice Head of Public Speaking and Debating. Emily Meredith was awarded third place in the Junior Reading section from 19 schools and the Senior Debating team progressed to the quarter finals. The readers must prepare two passages, one from a religious text and another from a significant Australian speech and the two must be linked thematically. The debating teams prepare two sides for the first debate and are allocated their argument on arrival. Subsequent debates are one hour preparation.
On Saturday, accompanied by Sarah Hayes as Head of Public Speaking and Debating and Staff, the Current Affairs team (Lucinda Nicolls Small, Emma Campbell and Katherine Evans coached by Ms Bradley), Religious and Ethical Questions (Gemma Moran-Gibson, Saskia Dumas, Isabelle Gillespie, coached by Mrs McClay); Junior and Senior Poetry (Beatriz Grattan-Smith, Hannah Forbes coached by Mrs Hannah) Senior and Junior Public Speaking (Jesse Ambler, Emily Meredith); the Drama team (Molly MacDiarmid, Amelia Caspers, Victoria Macarthur-Stanham, Hannah Gunning and Lucinda Reynolds, coached by Mrs Muir-Smith) and the Senior Debating team represented Frensham in the second day of the Competition. The Drama team was awarded medals for First Place and Emily Maker third place in the Junior Public Speaking from 26 schools. The team is commended for its performance in such a rigorous competition.
Please note an amendment to the ICAS Writing Competition results announced in the last Newsletter.
The following results were omitted from the list of certificates:
Year 11 Distinction Certificates: Emily Irish, Victoria Steadman-Towell.
The final preparations for the Junior Production will occur this week for the performances scheduled for the coming weekend.
Mrs Trish Symons, Director Language Arts
French
In Term 3, French students have been involved in a range of different activities and girls are commended for their efforts.
Early in the term students in Years 8-11 sat for the language certificate examinations in Listening and Reading with the results of these anticipated in November.
Year 12 students worked hard preparing for their HSC oral examination which occurred on 9 August. With the help of Madame Farrugia, Mrs Rule and Monsieur de St Guillaume, the girls confidently completed the Speaking component of the course with their final assessment in Speaking and oral examination. The girls are now concentrating on perfecting their reading and writing skills for the written examination.
Year 11 students are ready to sit for their End of Preliminary examination and will next term begin their HSC studies in both the Continuers and Extension courses.
Years 7 and 8 students have just completed the yearly examination and will begin work on a unit which combines group work activities in composition and culminates with film activities, edited using computer technology. This will be completed in Term 4.
Madame Heininger, Teacher of French
Japanese
Year 11 classes enjoyed the opportunities of practising Japanese with Yuri Yagamii, the Labo exchange student while she was at Frensham. The support the Reynolds family who hosted Yuri for three weeks and the Rookyards who enabled Yuri to sample life with another Australian family is appreciated.
Year 12 students are now preparing for the Listening, Reading and Writing components of the HSC Japanese examinations after having completed the Speaking section last month. All girls were pleased with the way they performed.
The Japanese assistant, Chihiro Takahashi has been giving invaluable guidance to students of Japanese in all years. Chihiro is from the Tōhoku region in Japan which is where Mrs Bradney-Smith studied Japanese literature for two years.
Mrs Adrienne Bradney-Smith, Teacher of Japanese
Mathematics
Students in Years 7 and 8 have completed the yearly examinations and are now focusing on class work and preparing for the remaining assessment tasks in Term 4. For Year 7, these will comprise a practical examination using concrete materials, plus a literacy and recall class test. Year 8 will be undertaking an extended research and analysis task based on the Data strand of their syllabus. Designated students across all Years 7-10 are currently finalising their work in the Mathematics Enrichment programme.
Year 12 Mathematicians have completed all course work and are engaged in rigorous revision programmes in preparation for the HSC examinations in the four different course levels.
Year 11 student Gemma Moran-Gibson, who is currently completing the HSC Extension 2 Mathematics course ahead of her cohort, has been offered a place at the National Mathematics Summer School for gifted and talented students. This is a residential course held over two weeks in January 2009 at the Australian National University and it is an excellent opportunity for Gemma to engage in the in-depth study of three or four different areas of Mathematics at tertiary level, alongside like-minded students from across Australia.
International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in Mathematics is a demanding competition entered by students from across Australia, New Zealand and Asia. At Frensham, all students in Years 7–10, together with the Year 11 Extension Mathematics, took part in this competition in 2008. The experience provides a worthwhile challenge for students and useful diagnostic information for the teachers, allowing the School to track students’ progress over time. The students achieved a high standard with a total of 58 Credits, 12 Distinctions and 1 High Distinction.

Young Achievement Australia
Young Achievement Australia (YAA) is a non-government charitable organisation which provides unique opportunities for young Australians to develop their entrepreneurial skills through participation in an intensive year long Business Skills Programme. Students work in teams and with business mentors to learn how to start up and operate their own small business.
Betty and Fred is the name of the small business started by 17 Year 11 students. The girls designed and published The Famous Cookbook which contains recipes sourced from many well-known people including the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd. The cookbook was officially launched on Saturday 13 September at the YAA Wollongong Trade Expo, held at the Wollongong Central Shopping Centre.
The Trade Expo provided students with an opportunity to set up a Betty and Fred stall to market and sell the cookbook to the public. The girls were delighted with customers’ response to their product and with their sales efforts with over $500 of stock sold. Students were pleased to receive Runner-up awards for the categories of Best Corporate Presentation and Best Marketing.
The members of the Year 11 Betty and Fred team include: Emily Alison, Charlotte Alrich, Sophie Bligh, Hannah Burrows, Jasmine Cain, Emily Cameron, Amelia Caspers, Eleanor Leeming, Annabel Livingston, Victoria Macarthur- Stanham, Alexa Mahony, Madeleine Maslin, Jessica Nagel, Grace Nelson, Lucinda Reynolds, Tamara Smart and Cassandra Wait-Hughes.
The students are appreciative of the generous support provided by their sponsors Mr Mark and Mrs Cynthia Newham and business mentors Mr Edward George, Mr Chris Pearsall of Sydney Capital Partners and Mr Martin Fenaughty of Bray & Associates Chartered Accountants.
