Winifred West Schools events

Reading Information Presentation – Gib Gate – 26 March
Feedback from the Gib Gate Reading Information Presentation by Mrs Bronwyn Tregenza, Director of Teaching and Learning P-12 has been positive.  Mrs Tregenza addressed key issues in children’s literacy development with a group of 35 Gib Gate parents.  The ongoing media debate about whether “whole language” or “phonics” instruction approaches should be adopted in schools was clarified as Mrs Tregenza explained the way various language systems work together during reading and the implications for educators and parents.  Common reading errors were explained in the context of children’s language development and the best responses from teachers and parents outlined.  A range of resources was examined, including an online provider of audio books and a demonstration of interactive, online activities designed to assist children to learn sounding and blending skills.  Mrs Tregenza also clarified the benefits of listening to, rather than viewing, digital media and outlined specific features of children’s books which have a direct, positive effect on both word recognition and grammar.

Catering for the WWS Equestrian Day - Sunday 3 May
Please note that FOGG members who have offered to coordinate the School’s effort at the Equestrian Event are hoping that every parent will be able to spare some time prior to or on the day, so that we host this major event to the highest possible standard.  Equestrian Event Coordinators note that we are likely to have at least 150 riders competing, from a total of 35 schools.

Parents who are able to assist with catering, please contact Mrs Antoinette Campbell on 02 4862 3023 or 04 1254 7221 or email: aclegal@bigpond.com.au

Parent Satisfaction Survey – Year 10 Parents
We thank Year 10 parents for their willingness to trial software on computers in the IT Centre of the Schavemaker Centre for Science and Technology to complete a Parent Satisfaction Survey as part of the Year 10 Parent Discussions on Saturday 21 March.  Whilst our key goal was to trial the process of data collection, we were also keen to note the feedback provided in response to a list of statements related to two major questions: Rate your satisfaction with the ‘Frensham experience for own daughter’ in terms of i) ‘What Frensham Offers’ and ii) ‘What Frensham Inspires’, with the text taken directly from the current values statement in the marketing publication Frensham – Education that Inspires....   From the early positive response to this way of gaining information, we will be trialling similar opportunities for parents over the Parent Weekends ahead.

Ahead: For the Year 8 Parent weekend next term, we will advise, in advance, the focus questions for which responses will be invited on the Saturday morning of the Parent/Teacher Discussions.

Staffing:
Frensham
We farewell at the end of term Mrs Jeannette Gibson, experienced member of the House Staff and offer our appreciation for her tireless efforts and broad contribution to House life over the past three years.  Also, we acknowledge with warm appreciation Mrs Virginia Tupou, who has completed Term 1 at Frensham in the part-time temporary position arising from Mrs Elliott’s absence during her recovery from illness this term.
Sturt
With our best wishes for the future, in the knowledge that he will remain closely linked to Sturt in the years ahead, we acknowledge Mr Paul Davis’s move to Newcastle, on conclusion of his role as Sturt Resident Potter for the past seven years.  We know that many will join us in a formal farewell to Paul next week and it is fitting that we have this special opportunity to thank him for his distinguished contribution to Sturt.

Frensham Advisory Committee – Frequently Asked Questions
Members of the Frensham Parent Advisory Committee are currently compiling a list of ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ to assist in the induction/welcome of parents new to the School.  To gain a direct sense of questions most relevant to Day Boarders, Weekly Boarders or Full Boarders, respectively, I have invited for discussion parents of Year 10 girls currently enrolled as Day Boarders, as the first reference group to consider a response to what might be included in an FAQ resource.

Enrichment and Inspiration

Year 12 Dinner
For the final Year 12 Dinner in our Term 1 Tuesday evening series, Year 12 was asked to discuss personal and group responses to the question: ‘What do we have to celebrate?’  Within a few moments the scribes at each table were writing at full speed and the general consensus was that there is ‘...so much to celebrate....’  As the term closes it is easy for senior students particularly to be focused on the challenges of final assessment tasks and to lose their sense of perspective about what really matters.  Tonight, there was definitely a sense of buoyancy as Year 12 left the Dining Room after what had been an impromptu celebration that facilitated a few moments to pause to refocus on how the gifts of ‘friends, good health, good food, family, education’ and ‘waking up without fear’ are not to be taken for granted....(Also listed – ‘rain at home’, ‘pets’, ‘the things we share’, ‘our differences’, ‘clean water to drink’...and: ‘knowing there is life after the HSC..!’)

Acknowledgement to:

  • Tennis and Softball players in the five teams who will be playing in Grand Finals in Sydney this weekend.  Performances by students last weekend, under finals pressure, augur well for strong team effort ahead;
  • The staff responsible for completion of our applications for Government funding under the National School Pride and Primary Schools for the 21st Century funding programmes.  For both Frensham and Gib Gate, submissions have been prepared to meet the Round One deadlines of 17 March and 3 April, respectively;
  • Grandparents of Gib Gate students who make such a contribution to the School by supporting Grandparents’ Day; the excitement in preparation is usually as intense as that evident on the day;
  • Musicians who are preparing for Frensham’s Friday evening Closed Weekend Musical Evening.  Led strongly by the senior musicians, these special performance opportunities are a highlight of the end-of-term calendar;
  • Rosemary Fairfield-Smith and the students she is coordinating to offer blood donation, in accordance with the student-led initiative originally inspired by Julia Richards (2007);
  • Sabrina Apitz-Grossman, Exchange student from Havergal in Toronto, Canada. Sabrina’s farewell address to the School showcased her insightful approach to the experience and her excellent public speaking skills;
  • Emma Campbell, Year 12, who has been invited by the Mittagong RSL organisers, to offer the Address at this year’s Service.  Emma was one of eight students representing Australia at the ANZAC Service in Gallipoli in 2008, as a recipient of the Simpson Prize (and Essay Prize) and she spoke to the local RSL branch, at their request, on her return;
  • Adriana Bond, Year 12, recipient of a Girdle for Music.

Easter Vacation:
In the lead-up to the Easter break, reminding students of the significance of the Easter story, we challenge them to consider the context in which we live and deal daily with the contrasts of pain and hurt and the power of love and hope.

I wish all a safe, restful vacation and look forward to the term ahead...

WINIFRED WEST SCHOOLS FOUNDATION NEWS

Centenary Appeal ~ 2013

Now that the New Year is well underway it is appropriate to address the role of the Winifred West Schools Foundation and what that means for all members of the Schools’ community.

The purpose of the Foundation is to raise funds for the development of Winifred West Schools in its pursuit of excellence in education.  In order to build upon past achievements and to uphold its commitment to this purpose it is imperative that the fundraising momentum be maintained.

In past years much has been achieved but there is still much more to do - as there has always been.  In May 1937, Miss West said: “We are now at a stage when the possibilities which we have known to exist, and have always believed in, are beginning to be evident to others.  It is good to have progressive plans for building.  The School should be suitably housed but we must not make the mistake of thinking that the buildings are the School.  What matters more than anything is our life here – our relations to one another.  The visible school should be the expression of the real school.  But the School must go on in order for the spirit to exist.  We must provide the structure.”

Nothing has changed in the last 72 years and, as we look forward to the Centenary in 2013, there is list of projects which need to be undertaken to provide the sort of facilities and staff professionalism which are indicative of a world-class school.

And hence, the Centenary Appeal – an appeal to raise an ambitious sum of money required to put in place such projects as the joining of Bryant and McCarthy Houses, a swimming facility, refurbishment of Clubbe Hall and renovation of the Gib Gate Oval.

Each one of us can play an important part in the Schools’ future simply by becoming a member of the Foundation, something which requires a minimum donation of $2,000 and which can be paid over a period of time.  Please see the enclosed brochure for more information.

The possibilities for achievement are limitless with your support!

Michael Yabsley, Chair of Foundation

GIB GATE

On Wednesday 25 March, students from Transition to Year 2 participated in workshops developing cultural understanding of the indigenous people of the Torres Straits.  The Torres Strait Islander group InDidgDance worked with small groups during the morning session and presented a T-2 interactive performance in the afternoon.  InDidgDance consists of three generations of one family with grandmother, daughter and grandchildren sharing their heritage through traditional song, dance, arts and crafts and storytelling.

On Thursday 26 March, parents with children in Preschool, Kindergarten and Year 1 attended a Parent Information session presented by Mrs Bronwyn Tregenza, Coordinator of Teaching and Learning P-12.  The discussions focused on how parents can assist children as they learn to read.  Mrs Tregenza stressed the importance of developing phonemic awareness within a context of sharing and developing a love of high quality children’s literature.  Parents are encouraged to visit the Gib Gate Library, a specialist children’s library, which is open to parents and children on Wednesday afternoons for browsing and borrowing books.

Curriculum Insights
National Assessment Program (NAPLAN) - Next term during Week 3, students in Years 3 and 5 will sit for the NAPLAN tests in Literacy and Numeracy.  The tests will be conducted across Australia on the same days for all students according to the following timetable:

Tuesday 12 May: Language Conventions – 40 mins for Years 3 and 5
Writing – 40 mins for Years 3 and 5
Wednesday 13 May: Reading – 45 mins for Year 3 and 50 mins for Year 5
Thursday 14 May: Numeracy – 45 mins for Year 3 and 50 mins for Year 5

The Language Conventions paper incorporates spelling, grammar and punctuation.  The Reading paper contains a variety of literary and factual texts presented in an appealing format for each year group and in the Writing Task students are given a stimulus to assist them to write an imaginative narrative (story).  The Numeracy Test includes Number, Algebra, function and pattern, Space, Measurement and Chance and Data, students do not have the use calculators.

Friday 15 May is the designated ‘catch up’ day for students who have missed one or more of the tests.

The results of these tests provide important information to schools about what individual students can do and will be used to inform and support Teaching and Learning programmes.  Parents will receive a detailed report indicating their child’s individual level of achievement and their skill in relation to the national standard.

Practice materials are in use within each classroom and teachers use these materials over the coming weeks to familiarise the children with each section of the testing.  While acknowledging that these tests are challenging, at Gib Gate they are viewed as another way to “have a go” at a variety of tasks on a daily basis.  Practice, follow up questions, talk and discussion ensure that the children feel confident when applying themselves to the formal assessment program.

Cricket - The Gib Gate Under 12s Cricket Team contested the semi-final against Picton on Saturday 21 March at Exeter.  The match saw excellent bowling and fielding on both sides with the final result coming in the last overs and Picton taking the game.  Parents who assisted with scoring and umpiring over the season are thanked for their involvement.

Basketball - The Gib Gate Basketball season is almost finished with the finals being played this week.  The two Gib Gate teams, the Astro Boys and Storm, will take part in the finals.

Cross Country - The Gib Gate Cross Country Team competed at the IPSHA Cross Country Carnival held at The Kings School Parramatta last Saturday 28 March.  The team competed commendably with many personal best times achieved and for most it was their first experience at this level.

Soccer Trials - Jonathan Chambers and William Duncan represented Gib Gate at the IPSHA Soccer Trials held at the Knox Sports Fields, Turramurra on Thursday 27 March.  Both boys found the trials challenging and the experience worthwhile.

Celia Stewart attended the NSWCIS Primary Girls Soccer Trials held at Mamre Anglican College on Monday 30 March.  Celia was selected into the ‘Possible and Probable’ Squad and played a final round of games.  Celia played with energy and skill on the day and is commended for her effort.

AFL Clinics - Kindergarten to Year 2 have enjoyed participating in AFL clinics this week.  The sessions involve basic AFL skills to introduce the game.

Farewell Dinner for Paul Davis
A farewell dinner will be held on Monday 6 April at 6.30pm, at Sturt Café, to commemorate Paul Davis’s time at Sturt.  To RSVP, please contact Sturt Gallery 02 4860 2084.  The cost for the evening is $44 per head.

Paul Davis leaves Sturt after seven and a half years as Sturt Potter to establish a new enterprise at Newcastle.  His impact during his this time at Sturt Pottery has been substantial.  From the first day after arriving in 2001, his vision was international.  Many ceramic artists were invited to come and work at the Pottery, these included Svend Bayer (UK in 2004), Victor Greenaway (Victoria 2004), Yasuhisa Kohyama (Japan 2004), Patty Wouters (Belgium 2005), Keith Rice-Jones (Canada 2006), Koie Ryoji (Japan 2006), Bede Clark (USA 2007) and Yasuo Terada (Japan 2008).  Through Mr Davis’s teaching at COFA in Sydney, he made strong contacts with tertiary institutions and encouraged many visits from students including those from the National Art School, Brookvale TAFE, COFA, and the Ceramic Study Group.

Mr Davis’s personal ceramics have developed strongly over the past seven years.  Mastery of glaze technology and surface texture has created powerful imagery on pots, revealing a mature synthesis of his Australia heritage combined with his Japanese training.  Since early in his career, Mr Davis has been invited to participate in joint and solo exhibitions in Australia and abroad.  His work is featured in private and public collections and in 2004 the Australian National Gallery in Canberra acquired a large Hagi glazed platter.

With his departure, teaching at the Pottery will continue with Southern Highlands’ teachers.  The overall running of the Pottery will be managed by a series of artists-in-residence, continuing the high level of expertise and professional quality of teaching which Mr Davis created over the last seven years.

Easter Hours
Sturt Gallery and Café will be closed on Good Friday and both will be open as usual on Saturday and Sunday.  The Gallery will open on Easter Monday.  Sturt Café will be closed Easter Monday.

Term 2 Extra Curricular forms will be emailed to parents this week.  Parents please note that Term 1 Music lessons will continue unless the School is notified of any changes.  If a student would like to enrol in a new Extra Curricular activity in Term 2, a separate form must completed.  All changes to Extra Curricular involvement need to be made in writing.

The first weekend of Term 2 promises to be an exciting one.  As well as the first round of IGSSA Sport on the Saturday and Sports clinics on Sunday, the School is hosting the WWS Equestrian Event.  It will be the first time that both the Primary School Event and Secondary School Event will be held on the same day.

Mr Geoff Marsh, Deputy Head

Director of Studies

Prep Guidelines
‘Prep’ is the preparation of homework which students do outside class time to help them learn.  It can take several different forms:

  • Review and confirmation of the day’s class work;
  • Short-term reading and exercises to help them prepare for their next class;
  • Long-term assignments and the research which goes with them;
  • Regular, ongoing revision and practice which help place knowledge and skills in their long-term memory;
  • Specific revision of knowledge and skills for a special task.

During term, Prep is a regular and important part of each student’s overall learning programme.  For senior students (Years 11 and 12), it is an expectation that some Prep is completed during the three vacation periods during the year, with Year 12 students (2010) also completing Prep in the Christmas vacation period.  For the coming vacation, students in these two year groups have been provided with information about the Prep required for each of their subjects.  In general, Year 11 students are expected to complete 20-24 hours and Year 12 at least 30 hours.

While Year 10 students will be required to complete a sizeable amount of Prep (12-15 hours) in the vacation periods between Terms 2-3 and Terms 3-4, in the coming vacation the only expectation placed on them is a Wide Reading programme set by their English teachers.

Students in any year group may need to complete an individualised programme which requires some specific vacation tasks to be completed, including Prep not done in term time.

Mrs Sue Flaxman, Director of Studies

Director of Boarding

This weekend is a Closed Weekend, therefore a Parent Free Weekend, and the girls are looking forward to the planned activities - a Sleepout Under the Stars and a Dance Off.

The following is taken from the latest Lights Out magazine from the Australian Boarding Schools Association:
‘To flourish means to live well, to grow in every sense, to appreciate the beauty in all things, to establish and nurture quality relationships [make good friends], to be able to manage challenges and be resilient, to be strong.’

To be able to flourish people must be positive about life.  All of us have positive and negative emotions.  We feel good and we feel ‘less good’ about things.  The positive feelings [emotions] are related to us feeling good about ourselves, our friends, our circumstance.’

The negative feelings are related to feeling unable to manage things, to feel angry, upset, unhappy because we cannot explain or manage things in our lives, we feel things are ‘just too hard’, we are not resilient and feel than we cannot or are not coping and it is either our fault or we blame others for the situation we find difficult and ‘life determining at that moment’.  We can also feel ‘pretty average’ and seem to be in a ‘don’t care mood’…all of us want to flourish, to feel good about life, to feel strong and able to cope with the challenges and still improve and grow, to thrive.  This is in everything we do in our lives for all things in our lives are interrelated and impact on how we manage ‘it all’.  The positive emotions are the emotions which enable us to feel confident, to have a go, to make good relationships, do well in all aspects of our learning about life and to deal sensibly and constructively with set backs.’

At the final Year 12 Dinner for Term 1, Year 12 compiled responses to the question: ‘What do we have to celebrate?’  It was a vibrant discussion that followed with very long lists highlighting how lucky they are to have so much to celebrate.

Travel
By now, girls will have informed the School of their end of term travel arrangements and if there are any enquiries, these should be directed to Mrs Wansey.

Mrs Ros Buick, Director of Boarding

Teaching and Learning

April Professional Development
The major emphasis for professional learning on 9 and 27 April across Gib Gate and Frensham will be collaborating with experts in literacy development, information and communications technologies and gifted education to refine specific learning experiences planned for Term 2.  By working in small teams of two or three teachers on existing programmes, the guidance of expert educators will have the most direct impact on student learning.

The two-day professional development programme will include literacy consultants Tina Sharpe and Karen Stapleton working with English, Visual Arts, Design and Technology, HSIE, PDHPE, Science and Agriculture to consolidate the teaching of grammar and text structure into units of work.  Ms Sharpe has presented at Linguistics and Education conferences internationally and specialises in helping students understand how to construct written language using vocabulary and grammar associated with specific areas of study.  Ms Stapleton is an English Consultant with the Association of Independent Schools.

Gifted and Talented Consultants, Lye Chan Long, Bronwyn MacLeod and Ruth Targett who are associated with the Gifted Education Research and Resource Centre (GERRIC) at the University of NSW, will work with Gib Gate K-6, HSIE, English and Science on embedding more complex, abstract and challenging tasks into units of work to ensure gifted students in mainstream classes are appropriately extended.  ICT consultants Melanie Hughes, John Clear, Tom March, Alex Galland and Eliza Collins will work across Gib Gate, Languages, English, Visual Arts, Design and Technology, Science, PDHPE and HSIE to introduce the Moodle Intranet as a Learning Management System, present IWB resources designed to suit the Term 2 units of work and guide teachers in locating and using online resources to support their teaching.

Mrs Bronwyn Tregenza, Director of Teaching and Learning

English and Drama

Students in Years 7 and 8 attended a Young Australia Workshop in School Hall presented by the poet and author, Steven Herrick.  He entitled the show “Poetry, to the Rescue” and in this he recited examples of his craft as well explained his approach to poetry writing.  Throughout the session he explained different ways students can create poems easily from what they know.  He was entertaining and as one judge of a recent anthology commented: “Steven Herrick’s ability to create rich pleasures with an economy of words is brilliant.”  It was an excellent opportunity for students to understand that good poetry arises from our experience and it is about our experiences and our perspectives which we should write.

Students in Years 11 and 12 are preparing for their formal assessments of the modules being studied at the moment.  Year 11 students are developing their speeches which show connections between texts for the Area of Study: Change. Year 12 classes are preparing a portfolio of written work arising from class exercise and study to show their understanding of the Area of Study: Belonging.  Girls in Year 11 Extension have studied a simple Transformation to help develop their understanding of the representation of context and values on texts in preparation for the more sophisticated module which will be studied in Term 2.

Entries for the Write Now Competition are to be submitted to class teachers by Friday 3 August.  This competition is held in conjunction with The Sydney Writers’ Festival.

Where a novel is to be studied in Term 2, students are encouraged to read this over the vacation.  Books will be issued to the relevant classes before the end of term.  It is important that these books return to School with the students for the commencement of class.

Students in Years 7-10 participated in the National Geographic Geography competition last week.  This competition tested students general knowledge of geography both in an Australian and international context.

On Wednesday 25 March, Frensham’s Mock Trial team contested Chevalier College in Round 2 of the NSW Mock Trial competition.  Frensham was the defence and despite gallant efforts lost to Chevalier.  The standard of performance was high and both teams are to be commended for their preparation for the event.

Music

This month Music students have enjoyed two stimulating concerts at the Opera House.  Year 9 students were moved by the immaculate singing of the St Thomas Choir from Leipzig, Germany at the first Meet the Music Concert and then all elective students in Years10-12 were inspired when they saw the best of the 2008 HSC performances in the Encore Concert.  The Music Faculty remains committed to ensuring students attend music performances of the highest standard as often as possible.

The recent Year 10 Concert reflected the continuing development of performance skills and standards by means of regular opportunities such as Concert Practice.  The Year 10 Music class staged a scene from Mozart’s The Magic Flute with their own orchestral accompaniment. Georgia Nelson and Ashleigh Syme impressed with a stylistic performance of George Shearing’s Lullaby of Birdland.  Imogen Talbot played a popular piano piece by the Korean composer Yiruma, called The River Flows in You.  The Frensham Flute Trio, comprising Mary Bokey, Emily Maker and Emma Quinn, performed an arrangement of Faure’s Pavane.  Matilda Street and Hannah Beith played a song called Falling Slowly by The Frames with great sensitivity.  The Madrigals sang a pair of short, contemporary pieces titled Swansongs and all of Year 10 entertained the audience with a joyous rendition of the theme from Arthur & Friends.

Visual Arts

Nearing the end of the term, several Visual Arts classes are resolving artworks to complete units of work.  Year 8 Visual Arts students have produced some impressive landscape paintings and etchings relating to their study of the local landscape.  Students in Stage 4 are developing a personal style and means of expression whilst working within the same parameters of the task.

Year 11 students have been producing artworks which seek to respond to the phrase "These Are Desperate Times".  The students have explored a range of themes and employed varied artmaking materials and techniques to produce artworks which have specific social issues at their core.

Year 9 girls will complete the building stage of their ceramic forms by the end of the term which explore aspects of the marine environment.  The forms are varied and elaborate and next term the students will undertake the under-glazing and gloss-glazing of the pieces.

Year 10 Visual Arts students are underway with their large artwork.   These consist of juxtaposed panels which must utilise aspects of the human form, pattern and text.  The choice of subject matter is up to each student and this provides them with the opportunity to develop strong autonomy and connectedness with their artmaking.
