GIB GATE • FRENSHAM • STURT
TERM 2 NO 4 - 11 JUNE 2009

Highlights from Gib Gate, Frensham and Sturt…
From the recent address by Ms Sally Robson (Winifred West Schools' Birthday Service)
What is Special about Birthdays? What does the Gib Gate Birthday Book tradition tell us about our School? It confirms our love of literature and of reading, that we value the opinions of children of all ages, and that our specialised children’s library is central to the life of the School, enriched by books selected by children. Perhaps most importantly of all is that in celebration of our birthdays we engage in an act of giving.
For those unfamiliar with Gib Gate Birthday Books the tradition is quite simple: To celebrate their birthday, Gib Gate children can choose a book from a selection of new and classic titles displayed in the library or, alternatively, they may bring in a new copy of a book they have enjoyed reading at home. The children, with the support of the Gib Gate Teacher Librarian, Mrs Marsh, write a short review listing the reasons they enjoyed reading the book and recommending the book to particular age groups. The children draw an illustration inspired by their book to decorate the inside cover and a bookplate with the child’s name and birthday is then affixed to the title page. The birthday child then presents their book to the School during Prayer Assembly.
The act of giving a book is long lasting and complex in what it achieves for the individual, the community and for our School’s history.
From Ms Liz Stephenson, Frensham…
Year 12 students Gemma Moran-Gibson and Lucinda Nicolls Small achieved outstanding results in the National Latin III Exam, with a ‘Perfect Score’. (For all results, please see page 8.) Gemma comments as to why she enjoys Latin: ‘I love the story of The Aeneid which is about the Trojan War – I find the whole course intriguing’. She also considers that Latin will help with her study of Science beyond school. Lucinda says: ‘I like the links of Latin to Ancient History and I love the structure of the language – I just love the words’.
From Mr Jason Smith, Frensham…
Representing Frensham at the annual Rotary Science and Engineering Challenge were 26 Year 9 students. The concept of the challenge is to engage students in a number of activities involving the principles of Science, Engineering and Technology. Through the numerous activities, students explore scientific principles for themselves rather than being guided to a predetermined answer. The Frensham team was commended for its innovation, teamwork and willingness to explore new possibilities and designs without fear of failure.
From Ms Megan Patey, Sturt…
At the Sturt School for Wood, students who complete a twelve-month course in woodworking move on to develop successful small businesses making bespoke pieces and designing items for commission. Often these students have no prior experience in woodworking but, with strong commitment and vision, they can make a difference creating small enterprises which endure because of the quality of the product created.
Professional Development
Earlier this term Frensham was congratulated by the Association of Independent Schools on the work done so far to establish a Learning Laboratory where teachers can be filmed working with their students. Video and audio of lessons can be captured from seven different angles simultaneously for later viewing and analysis by the teacher delivering the lesson. Frensham has pioneered the use of technology originally designed for security purposes to provide teachers with opportunities to observe themselves teach.
The idea for the Learning Laboratory was originally conceived in 2006 after a literature review of Professional Development models operating most effectively in the UK and the US highlighted the central role of lesson observation and feedback in honing teachers’ skills. The Learning Laboratory builds on this model by expanding lesson observation to include the teacher who taught the lesson.
While further refinement of the audio capture and output formats is required, the Learning Laboratory has been used to capture footage of teachers who head the Faculties of English, HSIE and Music. Their high-level skills in developing students’ technical language through discussion and their careful linking to prior knowledge have been evident in what has been captured so far.

GIB GATE
A notice has been sent home to Gib Gate parents advertising the upcoming Parent information session on ‘The JASON Project’ to be held at Gib Gate on Thursday 18 June. Parents with students in Years 5 and 6 and parents from all other grade levels are encouraged to attend.
The JASON Project forms a major component of the Stage 3 curriculum (Years 5 and 6) at Gib Gate and the workshop will give parents an overview of the current project, ‘Resilient Planet’. The JASON Project forms an in-depth, year-long unit of study which integrates the teaching of Science, English and HSIE and engages students through the use of online tools and real-world investigations. Parents will be introduced to the tools used by students and will find out how the project is used to develop time management and thinking skills essential for the transition to High School.

Ms Sally Robson, Head of Gib Gate
Extra-Curricular Activities – Last week Tennis coaching was trialled under the covered area at Gib Gate and the coaches believe that it was an acceptable alternative to cancelling owing to wet weather. Children should be sent prepared for Tennis, even if it is raining.
Dance students are excited about the progress of the routines on which they have been working with Ms Annabel Lomax and note that the ‘Dance-Off’ will be held on Thursday 2 July at 2pm on the Tennis Courts. Information about some simple props and/or costumes will be sent home to each class. These will be items which are easily borrowed or found at home.
Visiting Artists - Last Tuesday, Opera Australia visited Gib Gate to present its annual performance. This year the Opera performed Rossini’s ‘Cinderella’ which was well received by students.

Sturt Winter School 13-17 July - Sturt Winter School has 18 courses to allow people to devote themselves entirely to a creative pursuit. Coming from New Zealand especially for the Winter School is Roka Cameron. Ms Cameron currently works as a lecturer at the School of Maori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. Her recent work focuses on the translation of traditional off-loom, hand-woven garments into a contemporary art practice. In the course, students will learn the principles involved in creating a Maori basket [approximately 28cm x 24cm] made from the flax plant phormium tenax. Students will discover and discuss basic elements of design for basket weaving and produce a finished product which is both attractive and useful.
Belinda Biggs will show students how to draw and paint botanical specimens. Students of Ceramics will make and fire pots with Ian Jones, all in the two-week period of this course. With Loani Prior, students will use the iconic tea cosy to demonstrate the wild and sculptural possibilities of knitting and will make at least two tea cosies learning the art of shaping and textural moulding. These are just some of the courses on offer and for more details ring Sturt on 02 4860 2083 for details or view the website www.sturt.nsw.edu.au
Sturt School for Wood - Enrolments are being taken for the full-time Certificate IV Furniture Design and Technology for

The course is limited to eight students and will be structured around a programme of making, testing, firing, critiquing and developing a personal style. Prospective students must have a commitment to develop their studio practice. This course is suitable for those with some throwing experience (not for beginners). Tuition will be held over five days of each week, with studio access available at all other times. The fee for this course is $5,500. For further information, ring Sturt on 4860 2080 or www.sturt.nsw.edu.au
In order to help accommodate students taking these courses, Sturt is asking for anyone who may have a spare room, small flat or house, which might be of interest to students. Once details are received, they are passed on to students and direct arrangements can be made. If this is of interest, please contact Sturt Gallery on 4860 2083 or email shop@sturt.nsw.edu.au with contact details.

Director of Boarding
Next Sunday at 9.30am, Frensham will undertake the Salvation Army Red Shield Doorknock Appeal. The School considers this to be an important contribution to the local community as well as to the national appeal. Years 10-12 Day Boarders are encouraged to join the Boarders on the day so most of the local district can be covered. Community Service is an integral part of everything the School does and it tries to instil the belief that it is in giving that we receive. It is not just the giving or the raising of money that is important; it is the giving of time and making the effort which raises the awareness of the plight of others less fortunate than ourselves.
The Knitting Club, under the leadership of Sally Newton, is working busily so that more blankets can be sent to Dr Catherine Hamlin’s Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. The School is grateful for the support of Old Girls who send in squares to be made into rugs or completed blankets for this ongoing project.
Travel Requests
End of Term 2 travel arrangements need to be completed by Friday 12 June and House Staff will be asking girls for their details.
Please note that the School is governed by the regulations of Rail Corp who set the deadlines for bookings, therefore late requests cannot be submitted. The same situation will apply to the End of Term travel. Please ensure your daughter is aware of travel plans or e-mail Mrs Wansey so that the School can accommodate all requirements. Your earliest attention to this would be appreciated.
End of Term
Parents who would like their daughters to travel by air to a destination at the end of term need to be aware that transport to the Airport will be provided.
Return for Term 3
Individual requests for Airport pick up to return back to School cannot be accommodated.
The Sydney Bus to Frensham departs Central at 6.00pm and all parents are asked to arrange their daughters’ transport to meet that bus or make alternative arrangements. If assistance is required, please contact Mrs Wansey.
Mrs Ros Buick, Director of Boarding
Teaching and Learning
On 27 March and 4 June Mrs Alex Galland, an Education Consultant from Canberra who specialises in the use of ICTs for learning, worked with Science, English and HSIE staff to develop proficiency in the use of the Moodle learning management system which will become the Intranet for Frensham later this year. Bringing consultants into the School, rather than sending staff out to courses, allows teachers to participate in professional learning without disruption to classes. Teachers work with Mrs Galland during non-teaching periods and during Faculty Meeting times.
Senior Staff have begun shaping the Professional Development programme for 3 July in consultation with teaching, boarding and Health Centre colleagues. The programme for Frensham staff will include presentations and workshops from Melina Tankard-Reist, Spokesperson of Women’s Forum Australia. She is a Canberra-based writer and commentator with a special interest in issues affecting women, particularly the effects of popular culture on girls.
Gib Gate staff will attend a presentation facilitated by Professor Andrew Martin focusing on the educational needs of boys and how a co-educational environment can cater to the specific learning preferences of boys while also providing boys with exposure to the full range of social and academic models available in mixed gender groups.
Education consultants Ruth Targett, Lye Chan Long and Bronwyn MacLeod who specialise in designing curriculum to meet the needs of Gifted Students will work with teachers from K-12.
Mrs Bronwyn Tregenza, Director of Teaching and Learning
English and Drama
Pen & Ink - The first meeting of girls interested in creative writing and poetry was held on 28 May. Students from Years 9-12 discussed future planning and ideas for group meetings. Any girls who were unable to attend the first meeting will be warmly welcomed to join the group for the next meeting on Thursday 25 June at 7-8pm in Room 11.
Intensive Debating training will recommence at the beginning of Term 3 with Mrs Vink, in the lead-up to the Year 9 Debating day in September and the AHIGS Festival of Speech. Interested students in Year 9 will also commence the debating enrichment module which is a part of the programme for Term 3.
On 19 June, Emma Campbell will be representing Frensham at the State Semi-Final of the Sydney Morning Herald Plain English Speaking Competition which this year will be convened at SCEGGS Darlinghurst.
Students entering the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Competition are reminded that entries must be signed by their class teachers by Friday 19 June.
Mrs Trish Symons, Director Language Arts
Latin
Latin students have been involved in a range of interesting activities over the past weeks. On Tuesday 2 June, Year 12 students travelled with Ms Stephenson to attend the Year 12 Study Day held at SHORE, North Sydney. They listened to talks from both academics from the University of Sydney and Year 12 teachers on their set texts (Cicero’s speech against Verres and Aeneid Book 10) and on how to translate an unseen passage, a most useful talk with excellent tips.
Last Friday 5 June, the awards for the National Latin Exam were presented at Morning Prayers. This Exam, organised by the American Classical League, was held in the second week of March with 137,000 participants from all states of the USA, Australia and New Zealand, as well as countries all over the world - Bulgaria, Poland, China, Italy, Mozambique and Canada and, for the first time, Israel and Lithuania. There were 33,600 candidates for this examination of whom 138 received a perfect score – approximately ½ %. Sarah was one out of a class of 11 – approximately 9%. Year 12 (Latin III Prose Exam): Gemma Moran-Gibson, Lucinda Nicolls Small. There were 5,200 candidates for this examination of whom 54 received a perfect score – approximately 1%. Gemma and Lucy were two out of a class of 8 – 25%.
All girls are commended for these excellent results.
Kevin Lee Latin Quiz
On Wednesday 10 June, Years 9 and 10 students are travelling to MLC Burwood to take part in the annual Kevin Lee Latin Quiz. This quiz was started eight years ago to commemorate the life of Professor Kevin Lee, Professor of Classics, at the University of Sydney who had been a great supporter of Classics being taught at schools. Frensham has participated for the last four years.
The Quiz is organised like the ABC’s ‘Spicks and Specks’, with teams having to press a buzzer to answer a question. However, there are also questions for which the answers are written on a ‘wax tablet’, giving everyone a chance of winning points. There are two levels, a mixed team of Years 7-9 and a Year 10 team. The Year 9 team will be defending the title this year as last year, Frensham’s Year 9 team (the present Year 10) consisting of Hannah Beith, Rosetta Freelander, Cassandra Perry and Emma Quinn won the Final. The School received a plaque which has now been engraved with the School’s name and it will be handed over at the Quiz to be given to the winning team this year.
Gaudeamus igitur!
Ms Liz Stephenson, Senior Teacher Latin
HSIE
Students in Years 7-10 study a semester each of Geography and History each year. Year 10 Australian Studies students will change subjects at the beginning of Week 9. This will ensure all girls have covered the Mandatory School Certificate Australian History and Geography course prior to the School Certificate examinations in Term 4.
Girls in Years 7, 8 and 9 will change courses at the end of Term 2.
Mrs Jacqualine McCarroll, HSIE Coordinator
Mock Trial
Frensham faced Edmund Rice College in Round 4 of the State Mock Trial Competition at Moss Vale. Frensham was the prosecution, alleging that the defendant had brought into Australia an envelope containing a prohibited substance, heroin. The defendant claimed he had met a man at a party in Hong Kong who had asked him to take the envelope to Sydney and had a separate address of a Post Office box which proved to be non-existent.
Frensham was represented by barristers Sarah Loewy and Jacklyn Wyer, solicitor Isis Oliver, witnesses Guislaine Allen and Charlotte Midson with court officer Rosie Latimer. Jaleesa Newell and Zoë Philip assisted.
The Frensham team was well prepared and both barristers and witnesses managed well with cross-examination. The cross-examination by Sarah Loewy and Jacklyn Wyer proved to be the undoing of the Edmund Rice team as the argument was sustained and focused. Isis Oliver was proactive in assisting her barristers. Both witnesses performed faultlessly and Frensham’s court officer was an effective member of the team.
Frensham was able to convince the court that the defendant was not naive, as the defence team alleged, but knowingly imported the heroin. The magistrate decided that the defendant was guilty and that Frensham won the Mock Trial by using its material well. The team is commended for its commitment to preparation and for the skills displayed in the courtroom.
Mrs Judy Bradley, Mock Trial Coordinator
Music
The Frensham Birthday festivities and Year 12 Parent Weekend are always rich in music events. The Frensham String Quartet, comprising Hannah Beith, Mary Bokey, Adriana Bond and Madeleine Quinn performed Pachelbel’s Canon as the School entered Clubbe Hall for the Birthday Service on Friday. Other musical highlights included the Madrigals’ performance of Palestrina’s motet Domine Jesu Christe and One Voice where the combined Schools were led by soloists Eleanor Leeming, Isabelle Moodie and Victoria Steadman-Towell.
The Madrigals featured again in the Year 12 Service on Sunday when they performed Birdsong by Paul Read, with inspirational lyrics written by a child in a concentration camp. The entire School also sang the anthem Venite followed by Frensham’s setting of The Lord’s Prayer with Emily Irish as cantor.
In the concert which followed, the Kennedy Strings entertained the audience with their music as well as their comedic acting skills in a performance of the One Bow Concerto where soloists Hannah Beith, Gemma Moran-Gibson and Madeleine Quinn fought over the one bow. Isabelle Moodie sang Chuck E’s in Love by Rickie-Lee Jones with stylistic flair and Adriana Bond performed Bordel by the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzollaon the violin, displaying competent ensemble techniques.
The final items were the Senior Choir’s performance of The Man in the Mirror which featured soloists Molly MacDiarmid and Victoria Steadman-Towell, followed by all of Year 12 singing a well-loved song from the film Anastasia.
Since then, the Madrigals have represented Frensham at the AHIGS Choral Festival, held this year at Wenona. They performed with composure and attention to detail and contributed whole-heartedly at all times in what was an enriching day.
Mr Michael Spencer, Music Coordinator
Science
On Wednesday 3 June, 26 enthusiastic Year 9 students represented Frensham at the annual Rotary Science and Engineering Challenge. This year, for the first time, the event was conducted locally at the Mittagong RSL.
The challenge is a set of fun activities involving principles of Science, Engineering and Technology. The concept is to engage students immediately in the activity with a minimum of introduction and theory. Students explore scientific principles for themselves rather than being guided to a predetermined answer.
An example of such an activity is Gold Fever where a bridge is constructed out of the materials provided to carry a load across a test rig. The Frensham team came up with an imaginative and ambitious design which gathered much attention from other teams.
Other challenges included World Sailing Spectacular, where sail, keel and rudder designs of boats were modified and tested using a wind generator on a water trough, Mission to Mars where students constructed a buggy and suspension system for a Mars vehicle and Escape from the Lost World which used helium filled balloons and small propellers to negotiate a set course. The Frensham students were commended for their innovation, teamwork and willingness to explore new possibilities and designs without fear of failure.

Mr Jason Smith, Coordinator of Science
