80 Years in the Making

80 Years in the Making

CELEBRATING 80 YEARS OF STURT (1941-2021)

It is important to note that this October Sturt will have been championing creativity and representing makers for 80 years. In the lead up to Sturt’s 80th birthday we have been looking back at the legacy of talented makers who are part of Sturt’s DNA and helped make it the special place it is today. The Sturt Archives is home to a fascinating ever-growing permanent collection that tells the important story of the post-war craft movement in this country. Sturt’s collection along with the archival images of those talented makers help remind us of the legacy of this creative enclave that is still such a vibrant part of Frensham Schools.

L-R: Les Blakebrough, Sven Bayer, Ray Norman and Peter Young

We have been uncovering these wonderful images of makers to tell their stories for our upcoming exhibition Sturt – 80 Years in the Making running 3 October–14 November. The exhibition will showcase ceramic, wood and textile treasures from the Permanent Collection and will open the very day that Winifred West founded Sturt in 1941. Miss West said in 1945 she had founded “…A happy meeting place for people young and old who love beauty and good craftsmanship.” Her words ring true as always and we look forward to our doors opening again in Spring so that we can be a happy meeting place once more!

Tony Ameneiro

LAST WEEKS OF LANDSCAPE WITH ROCK

Tony Ameneiro’s beautiful exhibition is quietly waiting for the doors to reopen – frustratingly this beautiful show is closed to visitors at least until 10 September. We encourage you to go online and experience Tony’s captivating work Tony Ameneiro’s catalogue. Perhaps a beautiful etching of the Nattai River for Father’s Day!

FATHER’S DAY IDEAS

For a more unique and beautiful gift for Father’s Day look no further than Sturt Gallery and Shop. We may be physically closed but we have a gorgeous range of hand-crafted gifts from around 300 of the country’s best makers in the shop, which we can wrap up and send for you. You will find unique wooden boxes, pens, card cases, or a fine piece hand-made furniture that will last a lifetime. If you are not sure what dad would like you can always arrange a gift voucher. A gift voucher would brighten the spirits of anyone in lockdown. Call us on +61 2 4860 2083 or email us at shop@sturt.nsw.edu.au and we can help you spoil dad this weekend.
