End of Term 3 Dinner for Year 12 – a night for Reflection…

When it was not possible to proceed with the usual festivities of the Year 12 Dinner with parents and teachers, our end of term adaptation involved ‘just Year 12’ with a small group of senior staff, in the Frensham Dining Room. Parent Toasts were pre-recorded and proceedings were relatively informal but the atmosphere generated by Year 12, in a beautifully decorated space, sharing a specially prepared meal was testament to their maturity and good humour.

On behalf of teachers, in my response to the toasts by parents Kelvin Menzies and Liz Lyne, I noted to Year 12 that in preparation for the evening I had started to list all that they had ‘missed’ - and recalled the intensity of my own disappointment when the Birthday Weekend, then ‘Interschool Sport’ and finally ‘singing as a school’ were no longer possible. I share below, from my response:

‘Of course, I then applied the 24-hour rule, and urged everyone to help us re-group, as adaptive, creative ‘movers and shapers’ of the world – ‘grounded future-builders and solution architects’.

A source of inspiration for me were the words of Nobel Prize-winning French-Algerian philosopher and author. Albert Camus.  Drawing on his own life experience, he said:

‘In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love.
In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile.
In the midst of chaos, I realised, through it all, that in the midst of winter, I found there was an invincible summer.
And that makes me happy.
For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me...within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.’

In our first steps at responding to mandated change, we wanted to find immediately, new ways to sustain what matters most in our school: creativity; ways to sustain connection and critical thinking to effect essential change, strong character to inspire confidence to act, and kindness to support those needing our support.’

Now, at the end of the first week of Higher School Certificate Written Examinations, we are cheering Year 12 on their way to daily examinations and observing strong camaraderie and confident self-management – with just twenty days at most, till ‘post-HSC life’ begins for the Class of 2020.
