It has been a busy few weeks with heart-warming exhibition openings, Wood School milestones and Winter School preparations.
The Sturt School for Wood fulltime Cert IV students studying fine furniture design, presented their drawer project to a professional panel last week. It has been inspiring watching the 12 students flourish under the guidance of master maker David Upfill Brown this term. Students had to showcase their design for a piece of furniture with a drawer demonstrating their mastery of dovetails. Students passed with flying colours and even paid cheeky homage to their tutor donning lookalike checked shirt and vest. This week, the students are learning all about steam bending with renowned tutor Darren Oates.
Nikki Main and Sally Blake’s mesmerising exhibition of glass, sculpture and drawing continues in Sturt Gallery this month. Their intricate work contemplates the complex connections between all things, bidding us to pay attention to our interaction with the natural world. The artists met while studying in Canberra and share a deep concern for the plight of the natural world. A visit to the gallery will give you an understanding why these artists have such a strong following on social media. Web runs at Sturt Gallery until 17 July.
