Farewell and Goodluck to Year 12 Gib Gaters
Wellbeing Wednesday this week was a special occasion for Gib Gate students as we enjoyed the opportunity to say Farewell and Goodluck to our ‘Gib Gaters’ in Year 12 2021 at Frensham. A much-anticipated annual event, the Year 12 Frensham Gib Gaters’ Farewell would normally, in non-lockdown times, involve the Year 12 students spending the morning with us on the Gib Gate campus, playing with the children and re-living memories of favourite places and events from their Preschool to Year 6 years. It is always delightful to see how quickly these very grown-up young women transform back to carefree little Gib Gaters as they run around the campus - playing on the playground equipment, having a soccer game, revisiting classrooms and catching up with teachers - before quickly transforming back into composed Year 12 students as we conclude the morning with a memorable whole-school assembly in the Gib Gate Hall.
With a visit to our beautiful campus currently not possible and with students home learning, plans for the 2021 farewell were revised knowing how even more important this time to reflect and connect is, given the extraordinary times our Year 12 students find themselves experiencing.
‘Putting our feet in their shoes’ we asked Gib Gate students what they thought the Frensham girls would want to do? “See us of course!” was the unanimous response! So Preschool, Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 students and staff organised a Zoom Farewell session for 11.00am. Year 6 2021 students, Gib Gate Kindergarten 2015, were particularly excited to see their Year 6 2015 leaders and buddies, even if in an online format, and Year 12 were amazed to see how their little buddies had grown.
Knowing how much the Year 12 students enjoy re-living memories of their primary years, we then invited Year 12 to watch a video composed of images taken from their Preschool to Year 6 years at Gib Gate. It was so emotional to see these fine young women as they were all those years ago – although to the Gib Gate staff it only seems like a minute ago! The Gib Gate students loved seeing the photos of the Year 12s as tiny Preschoolers, or dressed up for all the special events we still enjoy at Gib Gate such as Book Week, Christmas Dress-up Day, the Year 5 & 6 Social, or taking part in Athletics Carnivals and Sport. A particularly poignant moment for Year 6 was seeing photos of Year 12 dressed in character for their Legacy of Leaders Project, a project Year 6 are currently finalising in preparation for their Legacy of Leaders presentation in Term 4.
At the conclusion of the memories video, Year 12 were invited to open their card and farewell gifts, a smiley face cupcake to remind them of all the birthdays they celebrated at Gib Gate and a copy of the wonderful Dr Seuss book, Oh, The Places You’ll Go! Our Farewell Zoom concluded with a special message read by Georgia Suttie Year 6 2021 (Kindergarten 2015 Buddy of Grace Mackenzie) which concluded with the quote
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!
