Our History

A rich history

A vision to nurture individuality and community spirit.

Winifred West, inspired by her upbringing in Frensham, Surrey, envisioned a school that nurtured individuality and community spirit. Alongside Phyllis Clubbe, she sought out a location offering an invigorating rural setting, eventually establishing the school at a property known as ‘Y Berth’, in 1913.

By 1918, word-of-mouth had driven enrolments to 100 students, with numbers growing steadily over the decades.

In 1934, renowned photographer Harold Cazneaux captured the essence of Frensham in a collection of images published in The Frensham Book, now housed in the National Library of Australia.

Frensham Junior School was founded in 1954 and has grown to become a leading academic, co-educational primary school and pre-school.

Frensham continues to honour Ms West’s vision of inclusivity with a non-selective enrolment policy. Years 7 to 12 currently consist of approximately 360 students, with Boarders making up over 70% of attendees
