The Jamieson Program

Character Education

About The Program

A strong sense of self.

Other schools are increasingly coming to understand what has been embedded into Frensham Schools’ curriculum since inception. That is, going out into nature and challenging yourself; by going out into the community and volunteering; by undertaking rigorous studies in global citizenship and ethical thinking; by exploring environmental issues in collaborative frameworks, character is formed.

While other schools are building outdoor campuses and creating add-on programs that focus on these issues for only discrete periods of time, Frensham is the program and the outdoor experience. Our 300 acres, including our bushland and farm, are utilised every day. The Jamieson Program concepts are embedded from Kindergarten to Year 12 into the entire curriculum and into specific programming.

A focus on developing strong character, and the exposure to a broad range of world issues and challenges, helps students to think critically, to be creative and courageous, and to be generous and collaborative global citizens.

The Jamieson program leverages our Frensham Character Education Framework to develop the personal competencies which underpin our School values. Through explicit learning, lived experiences, leadership development, service and outdoor immersion, our students develop their sense of identity, while discovering their impact on school, local, national and global communities.

What is the Jamieson Program exactly?

It is impossible to extricate the program from the whole school experience, but overall, it is about learning through action – applying critical thinking, navigating challenges and growing through service to others.

The Cambridge Global Perspectives Program is a dynamic and internationally recognised curriculum designed to develop critical thinking, research, and problem-solving skills through the exploration of global issues. This program encourages students to engage with real-world challenges, fostering collaboration and independent learning in a project-based environment.

At Frensham, students in Year 9 undertake the full-year Cambridge Global Perspectives Program, earning certification in the Lower Secondary Program through Cambridge Assessment International Education, affiliated with Cambridge University. This course encourages students to analyze global issues, evaluate multiple perspectives, and develop their own informed viewpoints.

Frensham Junior School participates in the Cambridge Primary Perspectives, where students are introduced to foundational skills such as research, analysis, evaluation, reflection, collaboration, and communication. This program nurtures their ability to think critically and engage with the world around them from an early age.

The Duke of Edinburgh International Award is available to students in Years 9-12, offering the opportunity to participate in the Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. These awards focus on activities that promote outdoor adventure, personal development, and community service.

In addition, the distinctive boarding context at Frensham empowers students to push boundaries, take managed risks, and cultivate ‘grit’—the blend of passion and perseverance essential for overcoming challenges. These experiences, along with the ability to navigate global perspectives within an ethical framework, equip students with the critical skills to thrive in an increasingly complex world.

To foster these qualities in younger students, Frensham Junior School will introduce the Junior Duke Program in 2025. This initiative encourages primary-aged children to take on challenges that develop life skills such as cooking, gardening, first aid, and financial literacy. The program promotes goal setting, resilience, and community engagement, with families supporting their children as they grow into independent adventurers.

Frensham Schools is committed to fostering a sense of social responsibility and community engagement among its students. Through various volunteer initiatives, students have the opportunity to give back to the community while developing empathy, teamwork, and leadership skills.

For example, Stage 3 students from the Junior School visit Annesley to play board games, write poetry, and engage with residents. At Frensham, students regularly visit local nursing homes to sing, play music, and share meaningful experiences with the elderly, strengthening ties within the wider community.
