Jamieson Program
Building character and community.
The Jamieson Program at Frensham Junior School fosters curiosity, resilience, and a strong sense of community through experiential learning. Outdoor education is central, with full-day outdoor learning sessions, conservation projects, and adventure-based experiences that encourage problem-solving and environmental stewardship. Students also engage in service initiatives, from sustainability projects like the Koala Project and Clean Up Australia Day to charity events and intergenerational visits that strengthen connections beyond the school.
Character education is embedded through explicit fortnightly lessons on citizenship, friendship and character strengths. Programs such as Peer Support, Buddies, and the Junior Duke challenge help students develop confidence, kindness, and a strong moral compass. Leadership opportunities grow over time, with Year 5 students stepping into responsibilities that prepare them for Year 6 Monitor roles, where they lead school activities, assemblies, and the Buddy Program, fostering independence and a commitment to service.
Student leadership
Developing confident and capable leaders.
In Year 5, students design, apply for and are appointed to positions of leadership and service within the School as a part of their Year 6 Leadership Program. Students are encouraged to take on Monitor roles that make contributions to the School in a variety of ways including Environmental, Library, Music, Service, Preschool and House Sport. The list is not exhaustive because the students are encouraged to design roles that are most suited to their individual talents and interests.
The Year 6 Peer Support Program provides important learning in teamwork, time management and interpersonal relationships whilst also teaching students about management and service. The student leadership program is delivered by the Year 6 classroom teacher and Head of Frensham Junior School, with the support of all staff. The program is monitored closely to ensure the students follow the Positive Peer Relations Policy.
Outdoor education
Building skills through outdoor education.
At Frensham Junior School, outdoor education is an integral part of our students’ learning experience, fostering a deep connection with nature. Students actively participate in caring for our school’s chickens, learning about animal welfare and sustainable practices. They tend to our vegetable gardens, gaining an understanding of where food comes from and the importance of nurturing the environment. Bush play encourages creativity and resilience, while bike riding promotes physical coordination.
Our Aboriginal yarning circle and bush tucker garden provides a meaningful space for storytelling, reflection, and learning about First Nations culture and community. Students care for our Land for Wildlife area, where they help preserve and protect native flora and fauna, developing a strong appreciation for conservation and biodiversity.
Through these diverse outdoor experiences, students build respect for the environment and a lifelong love of learning beyond the classroom.
Children from Years 1- 6 are involved in off-site Outdoor Education and camp programs, where they enjoy team building, adventure and challenge activities.
