Teaching and learning
2025 CurriculumA dynamic and engaging approach to learning.
At Frensham Junior School, our approach to teaching and learning is based on an Integrated Inquiry model, designed to develop deep thinking, curiosity, and a genuine love of learning. Through rich, interconnected learning experiences, students are encouraged to explore topics in depth, make meaningful connections across disciplines, and develop the skills to generate and apply knowledge in sophisticated ways.
We recognise the fundamental importance of strong foundational skills in literacy and numeracy. Explicit instruction and opportunities for deliberate practice ensure that students build confidence, accuracy, and fluency, providing them with the essential tools to engage deeply with their learning and apply their understanding across all areas of the curriculum.
Guided by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), our curriculum encompasses six broad Key Learning Areas, ensuring a well-rounded and engaging education:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science and Technology
- Human Society and Its Environment (History and Geography)
- Creative and Practical Arts (Visual Arts, Music, Drama, and Dance)
- Personal Development, Health, and Physical Education
By fostering inquiry, creativity, and critical thinking, we equip students with the skills and confidence to engage with the world around them, preparing them for success in their future learning and beyond.
Supporting every young student
Fostering an inclusive and adaptable learning environment.
We recognise that every child learns differently, and we are committed to providing the support and challenge they need to thrive. Through personalised learning programs and specialist intervention teaching, we ensure that each student is engaged, motivated, and progressing at a pace that suits their individual needs.
As children’s needs evolve, our teachers and learning support staff adapt learning plans to ensure steady progress. Our support staff are trained in all Macquarie University’s MULTILIT programs, to ensure the effective support of literacy development.
For students demonstrating exceptional talent, our High Potential Learners program provides tailored opportunities to extend and challenge their learning. Executive staff and parents work together to identify students for the program, ensuring they receive the right level of support and enrichment.
Teaching staff have completed specialist training in Gifted and Talented Education through UNSW’s GERRIC Gateway program. They provide advanced learning experiences through a range of extension opportunities, including the Grasshopper Program, which allows students to move between grade levels to learn at an accelerated pace.
Extra- and Co-Curricular
Expanding horizons beyond the classroom.
We believe in providing a broad and enriching school experience that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and personal growth. Alongside a strong academic foundation, our Extra-Curricular Program offers students the opportunity to explore new interests, develop new skills, and discover their passions.
Our extra-curricular activities evolve based on student interest and the availability of specialist tutors. Recent offerings have included Art, Ceramics, Cooking, Debating, Drama, Gardening, Gymnastics, Public Speaking, Robotics, Sewing, STEM, Tournament of Minds, Tennis, and more.
For students interested in music, we offer Private Music Tuition during the school day across a wide range of instruments, including piano, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, guitar, drums, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, viola, and voice. Younger students learning violin, cello, or flute can benefit from the Suzuki method, which supports early musical development.
Through these diverse opportunities, we encourage students to step outside their comfort zones, develop confidence, and embrace the joy of learning in every aspect of school life.
The Arts
Nurturing creativity through the Arts.
Our Arts program aim is to cultivate a deep and lasting interest in the Visual Arts, Music, Drama, and Dance among all students. Through these disciplines, students learn to value the personal and shared meanings that arise from artistic expression, appreciate how the Arts reflect and challenge societies and cultures, and understand the structures that communicate ideas, including their own.
Every year, all students from Preschool to Year 6 take to the stage in our highly anticipated school musical, showcasing their creativity, confidence, and teamwork in a vibrant celebration of music and performance.
In Years 2 and 3, students engage in a strings group program as part of their music lessons, further developing their musical skills. All students enjoy weekly lessons in Art and Music, taught by specialist teachers in our purpose-built facilities. From Kindergarten, students also participate in Choir, and have the opportunity to join the School Orchestra or small instrumental ensembles.
After-school Co-curricular Arts Activities are available for those wishing to explore their creative interests further. Throughout the year, students have numerous opportunities to share their work with others through Performance Assemblies, Soirées, Cultural Performances, Exhibitions, and our annual Musical Production, in which all students from Preschool to Year 6 participate.
Sport
Fostering teamwork and physical activity.
At Frensham Junior School, we emphasise the importance of physical activity in developing teamwork, resilience, and a healthy lifestyle. Our Sports Program encourages students to participate in a variety of sports, fostering their skills and helping them build a sense of commitment and teamwork. Frensham Junior School enters teams in a wide range of sports, including basketball, cricket, soccer, hockey, netball, water polo, gymnastics, tennis, athletics, cross country and swimming.
Our students participate in annual Carnivals for Cross Country, Athletics, and Swimming, with teams selected to represent the school at prestigious events such as the Independent Primary Schools’ Association (IPSHA) and Combined Independent Schools’ (CIS) Carnivals at the state level. We also offer a Swimming Development Program at The Centenary Pool, which includes the Fun Swimming Carnival for Kindergarten to Year 2, and the House Swimming Carnival for Year 3 to Year 6.
For a unique learning experience, students can also take part in Bike Education, using school bikes and helmets on the campus bike track during lunchtime. Through sport, we aim to cultivate a love of physical activity, instilling valuable life skills that extend beyond the playing field.
